Kristy McNichol of Empty Nest: I’m Gay

Truth rating: 10

(YouTube)

Twenty years after leaving Hollywood behind, Kristy McNichol is returning to the spotlight to reveal a big secret.

She’s gay.

The former “Family” star is publicly coming out in hopes of inspiring youth who feel they cannot do the same.

McNichol is “very sad about kids being bullied,” says her rep.

He adds, “She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different.”

McNichol, also remembered for her role on the sitcom “Empty Nest,” has quietly been living with her partner of 20 years, Martie Allen.

Despite the Emmy winner’s decision to reveal her sexual orientation, her publicist says the “happy and healthy” star prefers “living a very private life.”

McNichol herself tells People, it was finally time “be open about who I am.”

This does not come as a surprise to most, I’m sure. I could care less what her sexual preference is. I just wish she would come back to acting again. She’s brilliant, and other than Rick Schroder, is the best crier ever! When I see her cry in a movie, I typically sob. Wish you all the best, Kristy!

Not so sure that this is new news.

I always thought she was a great actress and knew that she had some problems (around the time of Empty Nest). I remember her show ‘Family’. She was great in that. When she was about 15 or so she revealed on a Barbara Walters interview that she had the BIGGEST crush on Donny Osmond. (I’m surprised I remember this I feel so old)

    Who cares!!!!!!!!!

Good for her for coming out to inspire others! But I’m wondering other than that, why did she do this? I mean, if she’s been out of the public for 20 years, what significance of her saying this have to young girls who probably don’t know who she is? Unless she’s coming back or something.

Secret? LOL. Glad she came to terms with who she is, but um, who cares whether she eats beaver or not?

Not a big shocker here anymore than it was for Ellen DeGeneres. But it would be great to see her working again. She was a terrific actress and I was surprised when she dropped out.

I always liked Kristy McNichols, but I have to say this is not really such a surprize either.

  • Remi

You care or you wouldn’t have commented.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I just assumed she was gay. I didn’t know she was hiding it.

  • ANON

    Your’re and ass.

  • Marie Grant

It’s ok to read what people comments are, but yours is just plain stupid. Why don’t you keep that to yourself? How about that.

  • Marie Grant

    I second that emotion.

  • Hypnogal

This won’t help kids. Kids don’t even know who she is.

Being supportive of the basic civil rights of gays and lesbians does not require a belief in the false notion that people are born gay.

They are not. Homosexuality is caused by emotional trauma – from childhood neglect, abuse, or any number of other traumatic causes.

If we love someone, we want to see them healed from the trauma, not married.

In the Netherlands where gay marriage has been accepted for quite awhile now, has seen no decrease in gay suicide – in fact, some studies show an increase.

If you do not promote healing and choose to ignore it for your own selfish reasons, their blood is on your hands.

“There is no support in the scientific research for the conclusion that homosexuality is biologically determined.”

    A. Byrd, PhD said, Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine

Peter Dimrock (MSW) said: “Many men who were sexually abused (especially those abused by other men), are confused about their sexual/affectional preference.”

    W.C. Holmes, MD said:

“Abused [male] adolescents, particularly those victimized by males, were up to 7 times more likely to self-identify as gay or bisexual…”

Lesbian activist Camille Paglia said: “Homosexuality is not ‘normal.’ On the contrary it is a challenge to the norm…Nature exists whether academics like it or not. And in nature, procreation is the single relentless rule. That is the norm. Our sexual bodies were designed for reproduction…No one is born gay. The idea is ridiculous…”

Lesbian activist and biologist Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling, referring to the “born gay” argument, said: “It provides a legal argument that is, at the moment actually having some sway in court. For me, it’s a very shaky place. It’s bad science and bad politics.”

Gay activist and scientist Simon LeVay said: “It’s important to stress what I didn’t find. I did not prove that homosexuality is genetic, or find a genetic cause for being gay. I didn’t show that gay men are born that way, the most common mistake people make in interpreting my work. Nor did I locate a gay center in the brain.” “Gay activism was clearly the force that propelled the APA to declassify homosexuality”.

  • Frederickty

Author and AIDS victim Jerry Arterburn said: “I was involved in the homosexual world as a blatant attempt to obtain the affection from other men that I did not receive from my own father.”

Due to his sensitive nature, he was more deeply affected than most boys when his own father rejected him early in life. Without a loving father figure, he yearned for affection from other boys by the age of six. His yearning became sexualized at puberty. He said being abused or severely neglected in childhood was “too common a thread to ignore” in the gay community and his female mannerisms were due to his mother, his only role model. He was NOT born gay. But he was saved and transformed, just as the Bible promises all of us, whether gay or straight, as we submit to Christ by repentance and faith.
