As Gossip Cop reported, it was announced in December that Stewart’s directorial debut, Come Swim, would premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival in January. The actress also wrote the script for the short film, which is described as a 17-minute long “diptych of one man’s day, half impressionist and half realist portraits.” The project, originally entitled Water when it was first announced earlier last year, was shot in Los Angeles over three weeks this past summer.
The short film was produced for the fashion and entertainment website Refinery29, and is part of the company’s ShatterBox Anthology, an online platform designed to promote unique and exciting new work from female directors. Refinery29 said of Stewart’s project, which premiered on Thursday at the Prospector Square Theater in Utah, “A surrealist journey through the imagination’s wild currents, ‘Come Swim’ conjures a stunningly kaleidoscopic portrait of one man’s emotional interior—unbounded darkness and desire.” Stewart also revealed during an interview at the festival that she’s gearing up to direct her first full-length feature film.
