The star-studded bash, celebrating the launch of Elle’s November issue and the eight actresses who grace its cover, was held at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Stewart began her speech by saying, “While I’m so glad to be here tonight with so many incredible people, I would be remiss if I didn’t say how much I look forward to a time when there’s not a need for a special night for women.” She went on to talk about being “a kid from the Valley,” whose parents inspired her to get into show business. “My mom was a script supervisor and my dad was an AD and I’m obsessed with the filmmaking process,” explained the actress.

Stewart continued, “I became obsessed with the search for something real, in tiny precise moments or splattered messy ones, and the precious and insane ways that we create those moments that make us feel less alone or at least valid in our craziness. Without that, we wouldn’t make art.” The actress ended her speech by praising her friend Dakota Fanning, who presented her with the award, and added, “I’ll do this for you really soon. Just ask me.” Stewart also gave a shout out to the various filmmakers she’s worked with over the past year, all of whom she thanked for hiring her to play a “complex woman.”

The other honorees at the event, hosted by Anthony Anderson, included Amy Adams, Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, Lupita Nyong’o, Aja Naomi King, Kathy Bates and Helen Mirren. Presenters and guests included Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nikki Reed, Ron Howard, Sharon Stone, January Jones, Chelsea Handler and many more stars.
