Kristen Stewart has won a BAFTA, appeared in films by David Fincher and Sean Penn, and is one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood. She’s also impressive in Snow White and the Huntsman, in theaters June 1. So why is the Twilight star so hated? Marlow Stern investigates.

During a pivotal scene in Snow White and the Huntsman, a sinister reimagining of the Grimms’ fantasy, Snow White is reborn, her white gown basking in an ethereal glow. She saunters down the castle steps and stares out at a gloomy assemblage of soldiers. “Fight for me!” she screams, her voice cracking with emotion.

Moments later, the “fairest of them all” is in full-on Braveheart mode, donning knight’s armor and commanding a legion of sword-waving warriors on horseback toward an impregnable fortress.

That this frightened bastard-cum-valiant hero is played by Kristen Stewart—with great élan—shouldn’t take connoisseurs of the actress by surprise. After all, she’s excelled in a plethora of roles ranging from a diabetic tomboy in David Fincher’s Panic Room to the oft-naked sexpot Marylou in an upcoming adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, which is earning her rave reviews at Cannes.

At just 22, Stewart is one of the world’s most famous actresses, commanding up to $20 million per film thanks to her starring role in the Twilight movie franchise, which has grossed more than $2.5 billion worldwide and counting.

But with great fame comes great Internet snark, and Stewart has fast become one of the most vilified actresses in Hollywood. She’s been pigeonholed by her detractors as a second-rate actress onscreen—thanks to the frustratingly emo, emotionally hollow character, Bella Swan, that she portrays in the underwhelming Twilight films—and a sneering, self-important Katherine Heigl-lite who’s run out of fucks to give. There have been numerous op-eds, including one by this very site, dedicated to Stewart-lash, as well as open letters urging her to, among other things, “smile,” “enunciate,” and “put on a little makeup.” If she so much as rolls her eyes when asked a dumbass question during an interview, the vultures descend.

Stewart first gained notice for her turn as Sarah Altman, the diabetic tomboy daughter of Jodie Foster’s character in Panic Room. The scene where Sarah suffers a seizure is arguably the most suspenseful moment in the film, thanks in large part to Stewart’s riveting performance.

“I didn’t realize that 80 takes wasn’t normal,” Stewart later told W of David Fincher’s notoriously meticulous directing style. “Just being able to say, I was 10-years-old and I broke all the blood vessels in my eye on that take, is cool. It was fun.”

Two years later, she earned critical praise for her performance in the Lifetime movie Speak, playing a high-school freshman who becomes mute after being date-raped by a senior student.

“Ms. Stewart creates a convincing character full of pain and turmoil—not an easy acting feat, since because of the nature of the story she has a limited number of lines,” wrote The New York Times.

After a few supporting turns, 2007 was poised to be Stewart’s breakout year, with four films being released. Unfortunately, the two films she anchored—In the Land of Women, a tone-deaf romantic drama, and The Messengers, a cut-rate horror film, were critically mauled. She did receive high marks for her brief turn as a guitar-playing hippie in Into the Wild, as well an outstanding performance as a girl suffering from Friedreich’s Ataxia—a rare, incurable disease that cripples the nervous system—trying to lose her virginity in The Cake Eaters. Despite positive reviews by critics, the film never received a theatrical release.

Later that year, however, Stewart landed the coveted role of Bella Swan, the 17-year-old protagonist in Twilight. She then handpicked Robert Pattinson, an unknown British actor, to play her vampire love, Edward Cullen.

“Kristen was like, ‘It’s got to be Rob!’” director Catherine Hardwicke told Newsweek. “She felt connected to him from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.”

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s series of bestselling novels, the film became a cultural phenomenon, grossing close to $400 million worldwide and making teen idols out of its two attractive stars.

Then came the backlash.

Thanks to the scandal-happy tabloids, who never warmed to her wry, self-deprecating sense of humor, Stewart quickly became a target and was lambasted for doing things any 18-year-old would do, like smoking pot on her front steps or mumbling awkwardly through interviews, including a much-ballyhooed episode on the Late Show With David Letterman.

Despite an award-worthy turn as a troubled teen in the coming-of-age dramedy Adventureland, as well as receiving the Rising Star BAFTA for her performance in the Twilight sequel, New Moon, she would gain the dubious distinction of being named High Times magazine’s Stonette of the Year for 2009.

ORLY… I have been reading the new reviews coming in and Kristen is quite a bit of positive praise, as is the movie. OTR a disaster? Everything I have seen so far says Kristen and Rob were the highlight of Cannes and the screenings of their movies was hugely successful… But carry on with your useless bullshit comments because it makes the fact that you will have your own bullshit smashed in your face all the more sweeter.

1) so far, SWATH has only 31 reviews posted on RT. Most movies have between 160 and 180 total reviews. That’s quite a ways to go.

2) if you actually bother to read some of the worst reviews you can clearly see that those ‘critics’ can’t stand Twilight. Look at their past reviews, they hate on Rob & Taylor too.

3) There are ten Top Critic reviews posted sonfar. Out of those ten, eight are ‘fresh’. That’s 80% fresh among Top Critics so far.

4) it’s funny that you mention indies. Bel Ami has only brought in half of its production budget in foreign ticket sales and will only be released in five US cities. It probably won’t make it’s budget backZ but that’s okay because it’s and INDIE. Indies typically don’t make a lot of money.

5) If Kristen is ‘so unlikable’ the. Why does she have so many fans? Why do all her costars constantly talk about how wonderful she is? Let me guess, she paid them off right?

KStew has a full time press agent to get her name in the media, reality is often different. People who were there say Nicole Kidman was the Queen of Cannes, and KStew only got attention because she trailed around after Rob. He is the undisputed King, every media outlet says so and he doesn’t even have a PR person. He doesn’t need one. His talent, personality and good looks speak for themselves.

OTR is a disaster on Rotten Tomatoes, and so is SWATH. It has 21 rotten and 22 fresh, and at that rate, it’s not going to swing back into the fresh column, the rest of the reviews that come in will not differ greatly from this ratio, they never do. 41 reviews is enough to form a consensus.

And box office estimates are just that, estimates. They’re frequently wrong, especially after the bad reviews go online and word of mouth spreads that the movie is dull, too long, and miscast.

You should be worried, the RT score has dropped to 46, the more critics who see it, the more they dislike it, and Kristen’s performance.

Both the Hollywood Reporter and Variety hated it, saying it was a lame copy of LOTR.

Shakespeare without the poetry, “Braveheart” without the performances.

1) Don’t pretend that you don’t search for everything Kristen related. We all know you do.

2) Yes, some critics do have an anti twilight basis. And f you look on reviews for Bel Ami & Water for Elephants you can see that they do the same thing for Rob.

Her record proves that she is a pretty damn good actress. The majority of reviews about we performance are positive. Why can’t you accept that?

3) Not all the reviews are in. Roger Ebert have SWATH a 3.5 out of 4 and he is notoriously hard to please.

4) I’m not sure where you are getting your info from but everything on the web shows that Bel Ami is only being released in five cities. Maybe is thirty theaters in total. The official website still says five. Why don’t you provide a link to where you found that?

5) You would think by now you would know what an indie is. The Runaways was released mostly overseas and only 244 theaters total. Welcome to the Rileys was only released in 11 theaters. Remember me was released in 2000+ and WFE 2800+. That’s a big difference.

Now SWATH will be released in 3700 theaters. It is accounting for 44% of ticket sales on Fandango. When the numbers come in on Monday you’ll see how many fans Kristen has.

6) So because Kristen is best known for one role you think that means that’s the only reason they hired her? wtf! Rob is best known for Twilight. Daniel Radcliffe & Emma Watson are best known for HP. Every actor gets their start somewhere.

Rupert Sanders said himself that he cast Kristen because of her previous work in Panic Room, Into the Wild, The Runaways, and Welcome to the Rileys. He has stated that he hasn’t even seen Twilight.

Oh, and David Cronenberg just said how Twilight is the reason that Cosmopolis even got funding.

7) Again, theater count matters. Bel Ami won’t do as well as WFE or RM because of the amount of theaters. Also because it’s rated R and the others were PG13.

Both The Runaways and WttR were rated R and released in a small amount of theaters. There’s a difference.

8) No one is ignoring the bad reviews from OTR. But if you actually take the time to read them they are mostly about the script and cinematography. The majority of critics are praising Kristen. Just like they are praising Rob for his role.

Yes, Kristen got multiple noninations for Best Actress. No, she didn’t win. But the fact that she was nominated at Cannes (which quite a few say is harder than the Oscars) speaks volumes. I wish that Rob was nominated as well.

The movie would make more money if they were vampires. Universal is already trying to manage expectations for ‘Huntsman,’ they know the tracking numbers were over estimated and the movie is going to tank.

The real budget figures are finally coming out, and it cost a lot more than they’ve admitted before, a minimum of $170 million. They were trying to lowball the budget so it would look like they made a profit, but they can’t get away with that crap now. It needs to make at least $500 million to show a profit, not just make the production budget back. See what Variety says.

Studio estimates soft mid-$30 mil domestic returns for pricey fantasy pic

Right out of the gate, Universal is managing expectations for “Snow White and the Huntsman,” citing three-day domestic projections in the low- to mid-$30 millions vs. other tracking services that have nearly doubled that figure.

It’s no surprise that U is playing it cool with “Huntsman,” given that the studio was raked over the coals just two weekends ago with domestic B.O. disaster “Battleship.”

That said, tracking is by no means an exact science, and U ultimately could be more on the money with “Huntsman” than the most optimistic observers. That will depend mostly on how well the pic registers with younger audiences and men, as it’s been tracking consistently with women.

“Huntsman” — budgeted at $170 million, according to sources, though others peg it higher — will have support this weekend from overseas wickets, as the pic launches day-and-date in 45 international territories. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

As we have proven many, many times a film only has to make 1.5 times it’s budget back in order to be successful. Do I really need to provide the link again?

Rupert Sanders said the production budget was $75 million @ WonderCon. Then the Hollywood reporter started saying $170 million after the advertising was added. Since $170 million is the total invested cost, anything over that is profit.

Variety is the only one saying a mid thirty opening. Box Office Mojo & HSK are predicting mid forties to low fifties. BoxOffice. com is predicting around fifty. And HitFix is predicting around sixty. Total domestic predictions range from $150 million to $220 million. Foreign prediction are currently at $280 million.

And Box Office Mojo is predicting that SWATH will be the #1 film this weekend. Don’t cry when SWATH is successful, k.

Of course they will also forget about Rob flipping the papz off. They have selective memories.

I guess that this nonnie troll’s new angle is to try and convince everyone that SWATH will fail. I can’t wait for GC to post Fridays box office numbers Saturday morning. I wonder what excuse the nonnies will come up with then.

You are forgetting that SWATH is being compared to LotR and Alice in Wonderland. AiW got not so great reviews and made $116 million opening weekend (in March). I doubt SWATH will be that record but that goes to show that anything is possible. Or are you forgetting how The Avengers beat their prediction by almost $50 million?

FRIDAY AM: Universal has done an excellent job in lowering expectations for its big early summer tentpole Snow White And The Huntsman. Tracking for weeks now had been underperforming and the studio kept telling everybody it expected only a $38M-$42M domestic opening weekend. That result would be devastating on the heels of the very disappointing domestic performance of Universal’s Battleship last month. But rival studios are telling me this morning that Snow White‘s tracking took a dramatic uptick at the end of this week and finished strong — to the point that Hollywood is now expecting an acceptable $50+M finish through Sunday. Certainly Snow White And The Hunstman‘s midnight screenings in 1,092 theaters bear that out: they grossed a promising $1.383M. That’s a far better per-screen average for the non-3D/non-sequel movie than last weekend’s slow-to-start Men In Black 3 which took in $1.550M midnights from 2,232 theaters even with the 3D premium and sequel marketing advantage.

It was Garret Hudland who received a lot of praise for his portrayal of Dean. And Kristen Stewart was the one who received the most mixed reviews for her performance in On the Road. It’s hard to see it doing more than around the 146 million domestic, and around half of that internationally, it’s not doing well overseas, so that’s not even going to come close to the $340 it needs to show a profit.

Profit is not calculated by merely meeting the budget, which was $170 million. Between marketing costs, prints, etc., this film won’t show a profit. It was not a hit, it just wasn’t a massive bomb. But studios don’t stay in business forever if they don’t make a profit, and producers will take note that even though there’s now talk of a sequel, the film still wasn’t profitable.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some recasting of a particular female part. The one who reviewers pointed out was wooden, expressionless and lacked the warmth to make audiences feel sympathy for her. And who’s made another film that failed to show a profit. That opening weekend wasn’t enough in the long run, a film has to keep drawing an audience past 3 days. KStew doesn’t have that kind of drawing power, at least, she’s never proven that she did.
