For the past 13 years, the publication has chosen actors and actresses who gave the best performances of the year and featured them in a portfolio in its magazine. Stewart was recognized this year thanks to her work in the films Personal Shopper, Certain Women, Cafe Society and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. A.O. Scott, the New York Times film critic who chose Stewart for the “Great Performers” series, praised the actress while explaining his decision to feature her. “With Grace, stealth and startling modesty, this onetime teen-franchise star has fashioned herself into one of the most inventive and subtle character actors in movies today,” the journalist wrote.
In addition to appearing in the magazine, the performers featured also star in short films, with this year’s theme being L.A. film noir. Stewart’s old-fashioned black-and-white short features her holed up in a bar during a police shootout as she delivers a monologue to a “dying lover.” Additional actors and actresses included in this year’s “Great Performers” series include Denzel Washington, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Casey Affleck.
