Excellent Take On A Classic Tale, 14 May 2012

When I heard they were making this film, I was slightly anxious how this would turn out. After the disappointing re-imagining of Alice In Wonderland, I feared this would go the same way. I was wrong. Everything about this film was excellent. The level of design, the cinematography, the acting and the special effects all absolutely shone and brought this world to life, stepping effortlessly from serene and beautiful, to tough and gritty in a heart beat.

So lets talk about the cast. Yes, I had my reservations when I heard the main three characters were all played by non-Brits (Stewart, Theron and Hemsworth) having said that, they all played their characters excellently. Stewart’s portrayal of Snow White was a subtle and intelligent performance. Her accent (and this is coming from a Brit) was pretty good, in fact all three did very well in that department. Stewart has really progressed as an actress and found her feet in this film. She looked absolutely stunning with the help of incredible cinematography, but what impressed me most of all was her characters arc throughout the film. She has really provided young girls with an excellent role model. Turning from a damsel in distress to a woman who can really stand her ground and fight for what she believes in.

Chris Hemsworth surprised me in this film. His accent did suffer slightly, however it did not detract from what I thought was a great performance. In particular the scene in which he talks about his dead wife to a lifeless Snow White was extremely heartfelt and showed a side to him that I’ve have not seen in his previous movies.

Theron, Queen Ravenna, played the part expertly. Her character could have easily have become two dimensional, but Charlize added a quality which almost gained sympathy from the audience. Her struggle for undying beauty and immortally, may be a shallow one, however the way she played it with such commitment, energy and sometimes poignancy made us completely believe how deeply craved for it, therefore earning her right to be so deliciously wicked.

I would liked to have seen more of the seven dwarfs and I feel they were slightly under used. Ray Winstone, Nick Frost and Toby Jones provided the comic relief the film needed in such darkness however also provided one of the most touching scenes which was acted brilliantly by all and shot stunningly.

Adding to the beautiful camera work was the stirring, operatic score. Composed by James Newton Howard, it really lifted the film and stood out over the chaos of the battle scenes, created tension in all the right places, and moved me to the point where my hair on my arms and neck stood on end.

Finally, I would whole heartedly recommend this film. This is the best blockbuster this year and has really given the kiss of life to the fairy tale genre, breathing new air into a this classic form of story telling. The director Rupert Sanders said in his speech before the film, that he wanted to create a film with heart, that he felt has been missing from some movies recently, and he really has delivered. It would have been easy for a new director to be overwhelmed by such a large budget, scale and special effects, but not once did he let it overshadow the story and the characters. Snow White says in the film :”You will not take me heart” which is exactly was Sanders seems to have said to Hollywood Blockbusters, as he has created a film with so much heart, that not even a poison apple could put it to sleep

Some of her collauges (I won’t make names,but I’ve someone in my mind) talk always about how they will deal with the fame,with the paps,instead she talks of her character,why she love her character,how she get in the mind of her character,who she would like to play… This is someone who LOVES her job.

As someone who curses, I find what is written here to be insulting to me even though you are trying to insult Kristen.

I think you have your numbers mixed up. First is that there is a law in the entreatment business that there is a limited of hours that an actor or even the crew members that are working in a project can work in the laps of the 24 hours, so 16 hours daily for lets say the 200 day that you have informed are 6 moths which is not done in the industry.

Secondly you need to take in account the year that you are working with since 50 weeks is not a whole year; tend to be 52 to 53 weeks or 54 weeks depending on the year.

Thirdly take in account today’s economic situation regarding location, you will be surprise how many hours the average person works and how many job they hold to sustain themselves.

Is her life easier than the average person that depend on who you ask and how you ask them.

Snow White And The Huntsman | Theatrical Review by Andrew Jones

Snow White And The Huntsman was looking like the GOOD Snow White film as the trailers for both that and Mirror Mirror did the rounds, with a gritty, Ridley Scott-historical epic style in place of the gothic or fantasy elements, and some rather inventive and odd visuals in keeping with the setting.

Snow White And The Huntsman’s best visuals are in the trailer. Because during the 127 minutes of film, most of it is, as Universal appears to be prone to doing post-Bourne, shot without a tri-pod, steadicam or cameraperson who likes to stand relatively still. Shaky-Cam is rife and invades over half the film, at the most inappropriate moments, which would at least be fine if the film was directed competently.

Unfortunately, first time director Rupert Sanders is as good at handling action as Chris Nolan in Batman Begins. A simple scene where Snow White uses a nail to scratch a baddie is shot in such a way that you don’t know if she impaled that beast into his neck, or temple, or just punched him hard. Crazy.

The film starts badly enough, with Chris Hemsworth’s Robin Hood-level accent (Think it’s Scottish, but it hits Irish, Australian, Drunk and Shire before really getting anywhere near Scottish) narrating us through the early years of Snow White (Her mother wanted a girl as white as snow, with blood that is red and hair that is black. Man, genetic modification of children was crazy back then. Especially with the aborting of fetuses whose blood wasn’t red.) Then she died and stuff, and Snow White was pretty (Though the child actress doesn’t really know how to act, not the only weak performance here), and Charlize Theron’s evil Queen used her sexiness (Which she has in spades) to win over the king, and then kill all of the people.

FINALLY Kristen Stewart appears and the film focuses on her, but after the opening fifteen minutes spending more time on the evil Queen, with Charlize Theron not daring to let the scenery be chomped on by anyone else, we have no standing with this version of Snow White, and neither does Stewart. She does her basic stuff here, no quality acting on display, just bog-standard Twilight paycheck performance, confusing underacting with subtlety. Is she a great and powerful woman hidden from life? Is she a princess who can unite the land? Is she a presence worth hanging around 127 minutes with? I can only answer the last one with fact. No, she’s not. And as soon as she leaves the tower, in which she’d been locked up in for a decade, Kristen Stewart isn’t given so much of a script than an SAS assault course to traverse, getting muddy, going through shit (Much like the audience), finding a white horse luckily on a beach*, and running and running and running.

*The film is going for gritty, serious, dark aesthetics, but the fairy-tale guff in this is so overplayed, like the perfect white horse, I think delivered by fairies, just let to happen with no context.

And then, all of a sudden, Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman appears in the film, hired after a fight to hunt for Snow White, he finds her and instantly decides she’s worth helping against those who, knowing if they don’t agree to the already agreed upon deal, won’t get the girl, don’t agree to the already agreed upon deal. I KNOW! WHAT THE HELL?!?

So, Snowy and Hunts are running away from the bad guys, and then go to a village and learn who Snow White is (She’s Snow White), and then run to another forrest, where painfully tonal anomaly/unfunny dwarves Bob Hoskins (Phoning it in with crazy line readings), Toby Jones and Eddie Marsan, doing a duo thing that’s embarrassing, Ray Winstone with a mega-stupid haircut, and Nick Frost charged as the comic character of the lot, and as such is as unfunny as ever, whimsically waste time, and sometimes try to have serious moments and backstories that are just fruitless and dull.

Oh, Ian Mcshane is also a dwarf, but he doesn’t register because he doesn’t tell anyone they have a cunt mouth.

In addition, there’s Sam Claffin (He who was meant to break out in Pirates last year, but even that film didn’t believe in him) as the Prince Charming, who I figured was actually the brother the entire film, and thus it seemed to get incestuous, chasing after everyone, wanting to protect Snow White.

And so, they all band together with the remnants of the non-Queen forces, and go to fight off the baddies. Or they would, but you can’t make heads nor tales of what’s happening in the action scenes, or half the exposition for that matter, due to the painfully awful camerawork and direction. It’s a messy blur, a hodgepodge of bland, unfocussed activity which, sinfully for an action film, doesn’t provide a 3-Act structure to the action, nor a build up or conclusion. It’s just another “And then add a fight into the scene to liven things up” movie. Which makes sense with the three different writers working on it.

Snow White And The Huntsman is a painfully crafted, piss-poor paced ‘action’ film that manages to fail at providing a sense of scale with practical production design that should be glorious, and with poor poor direction and writing, would require amazing acting to even make it mediocre. As it happens, Snow White has over-acting, under-acting, non-acting, comic acting, weird accents and five different tonal ideas in any one scene. A complete and utter mess, a shameful waste of time, and sinfully dull to the point of pain. Avoid.

1) The law in most states says that a person cannot work more than 18 hours daily.
Considering that she films 2-3 movies each year, 200 working days is probably very accurate.

2) Yes, I realize that there are 52 weeks in a year. Most people take one to two weeks vacation.

3) This is directly from someone who has worked with her. It is known that she worked almost every single day on all the twilight films and SWATH. 

4) I said *the average person* works 40 hours weekly. That is technically a full work week. Some work more, some less. 40 is the average.

Wow not a fan of this shoot nor really much of the interview for that matter, actually a bit disappointed in the direction of this interview. But Kristen can’t please all her fans all the time, love the fact she is showing off her dark siren side but this whole shoot just seems very weird to me for some reason. I’d much rather see my girl in some nice colors like in her glamour shoot. Love the fact she said “it’s ridiculous” lol and also the fact that she doesn’t try to pretend to be some hardcore person when she hasn’t really had it hard in life as she said she’s had it easy, explains why she tackles on such different roles that are different than what she has encountered yet she still can’t act…right? I checked those user histories and neither are Kristen fans. One is an Angelina Jolie fan. That guy is a blogger, not a legit critic. If you are going to use his review then you have to use all of the tweets from other bloggers and critics who loved the movie and were impressed with Kristen’s performance. Just as with all movies and crititics, she will get good reviews and then she will get some bad reviews. Let’s just wait until the real critic reviews come out. That will be two weeks from now. Why not hope for the best for her instead of trying to bring h down all the time. If you are a fan of Rib’s, he would not appreciate what you are doing to her. Be a fan and respect him. Now all you are doing is setting the stage so that if bad reviews come out of him for Cosmopolis the crazy Krisbians will throw it in your face like they did with his reviews for Bel Ami. Universal Pictures has really become universal literally. They’re releasing “Snow White and the Huntsman” starring Charlize Theron in 25 countries before they unleash it on U.S. audiences on June 1st. This seems to be the new marketing scheme for studios nervous about releasing blockbusters domestically, especially if bad reviews can hurt the box office.

This scheme also worked wonders for “The Avengers.” Soon all blockbusters will be released abroad first, no doubt, as insurance against failure.

Have u guys ever stopped and think that the posters saying crap about Rob and KS; are just doing it to get under ur guys’ skins? Did u ever think that maybe, just maybe, they enjoy the attention u are giving them? You know what they say is crap, THEY know what they say is crap. They just want a reaction out of u guys. Whenever u see a poster say something bad about them, just remember: they are making them even more famous.

You are so pathetic. Having an interview in a bookstore doesn’t prove that she’s smart, just that her publicist who arranged for the interview to be conducted there is. She was homeschooled because she claimed her teachers failed her, but it comes across more that she just didn’t want to go to school and do the work like everyone else, she thought she was a special snowflake who was above it all.

And she didn’t even get her high school equivilacy diploma until she was 19. And she didn’t go on to college like Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, and many others have. Even Nikki Reed has taken college courses, even if she hasn’t gone long enough to earn a degree.

And KStew’s remarks about those books shows that she doesn’t even understand what she reads, she’s wrong on many counts. It’s kind of frightening how twisted her ideas are.

Now the real reviews are starting to come out, and no surprise,they’re bad.

As exhibits for a personality profile — and also as mass-market blockbusters, for rather different audiences — the two movies are chalk and cheese. It’s certainly hard to imagine Kristen Stewart’s incarnation of Snow White attempting to whistle while she worked — all you’d get is a pained screech.

OTR failed at Cannes, it got a lukewarm reception, mostly bad reviews, and the cast was told they had to stop doing interviews, it was too embarrassing. They snuck out of town and that’s the end of that. Another little indie failure for KStew, only this time she ruined a classic book, not just some original story by a lousy screenwriter.

I think it’s a neat idea! She can get away with it because she’s so fem & pretty. :)
