Kristen Stewart Cesar Awards Acceptance Speech Video: First American Actress Ever To Win
Kristen Stewart won Best Supporting Actress at France’s prestigious Cesar Awards on Friday, becoming the first American actress ever to take home honors from the French equivalent of the Oscars. Stewart triumphed for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria, in which she plays the assistant to an actress portrayed by Juliette Binoche.
Her victory marks a huge milestone. As Gossip Cop reported in January, Stewart was the first American actress to even get a nomination in 30 years, scoring the first nod since Julia Migenes for 1984’s Carmen. Adrien Brody was the last American actor to be nominated and win, for 2002’s The Pianist. Stewart’s win on Friday prompted Julianne Moore, her co-star in another critically acclaimed recent film, Still Alice, to tweet, “YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Stewart began her acceptance speech by speaking some French before shifting to English. She effusively thanked Binoche, as well as the director, Olivier Assayas. Stewart was so overwhelmed by the moment, she couldn’t even hold the trophy, asking the presenter to place it on the podium instead.
