VIDEO: Kory Wheeler Wows On American Idol Premiere After Jennifer Lopez Predicts He’ll “Suck”
Kory Wheeler was a standout on the season 14 premiere of “American Idol” on Wednesday, despite Jennifer Lopez openly admitting she expected him to “suck.” Check out the video below!
Auditioning in front of returning judges Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr. in Nashville, the 26-year-old somewhat awkwardly revealed he actually worked in the coffee shop across the street, and his boss let him take a one-hour break to try out for the show. Wheeler sang the classic “I Can’t Make You Love Me” while playing the acoustic guitar.
And to Lopez’s surprise, she loved it, and even got goosebumps. “I can’t even say I’ve heard somebody sing like you,” she told Wheeler. Connick agreed, telling the barista, “I love the sound of your voice. It’s a great voice. We don’t actually hear a lot of voices like that.” And Urban declared, “You know what I love about that? Everything.”
After Wheeler happily left the room with his golden ticket to Hollywood, Connick confessed, “That was probably the biggest juxtaposition to someone introducing himself to playing.” Meanwhile, host Ryan Seacrest left the arena where the auditions were being held to accompany Wheeler back over to his job. Breaking the news that Wheeler made it through the initial round, Seacrest convinced the contestant’s manager to give him the rest of the day off!
As Gossip Cop previously reported, for the first time in the history of the FOX music competition, the show revealed the Top 24, or at least their voices, weeks before their premiere, and again at the start of the episode. Will Wheeler eventually be revealed as part of that group? Check out the video below, and tell us what you think!
