‘Kong: Skull Island’ Is Weekend Box Office King

The science-fiction movie, which resurrected King Kong, tracked higher than originally anticipated for a $61 million debut. The ape movie essentially moved most of last week’s box office positions down one spot. Taking second place this week was last weekend’s winner, Logan, starring Hugh Jackman is his final stand-alone Wolverine movie. The film earned $37.8 million.
Get Out, which slid in the past couple of weeks from first to second, was in the third position with $21 million in ticket sales. Coming in fourth was The Shack, starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer, with a take of $10 million. And nabbing fifth place was The Lego Batman Movie, with $7.8 million.
Rounding out this week’s Top 10 was Before I Fall in sixth, with $3.1 million in receipts. Securing the seventh spot for the second week in a row was the critically acclaimed Hidden Figures, with $2.8 million. John Wick 2, which came in sixth last week, dropped down to eighth with $2.7 million, while La La Land moved up one position to ninth. The musical, which famously did not win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, but raked in several other Oscars, made another $1.8 million. And just making it into the last spot in the Top 10 was Fifth Shades Darker. The erotic film earned $1.6 million.
