Kim Kardashian Met Gala Dress Inspired By Cher, NOT Beyonce — SEE PHOTOS!
When Kim Kardashian arrived at the 2015 Met Gala on Monday in a sheer dress with a feathered bottom, she was quickly accused of copying the look Beyoncé wore to the fashion event in 2012. As it turns out, Kardashian was actually inspired by a different music icon: Cher. See photos below!
Designed by Peter Dudas as his first creation for Robert Cavalli, Kardashian’s long-sleeved gown had see-through embroidered cut-outs, before giving way to a feathered train. It immediately reminded many of a Givenchy Haute Couture dress Beyoncé memorably wore to the 2012 Met Ball. Like Kardashian’s dress, Beyoncé’s was long-sleeved and sheer with embroidered cut-outs, capped off with feathered finish. To some, the only difference between the two outfits was that Kardashian’s was all white, while Beyoncé’s was black and purple at the bottom.
But Kardashian apparently wasn’t trying to steal Beyoncé’s style, only Cher’s. The reality star posted on Instagram an old photo of Cher wearing one of her signature Bob Mackie creations, and explained, “Tonight’s inspiration! Cher at the 1st ever Met Gala! I just met her and told her this photo was my inspiration for my dress tonight! She is so beautiful! So happy I met her!” Indeed, at the inaugural Met Gala in November of 1974, Cher wore a long-sleeved, see-through outfit, though the superstar’s was a jumpsuit and had feathers not just on each leg, but also the arms.
Now several decades later, Cher went for a more conservative, at least for her, look at tonight’s Met Gala. Interestingly, Beyoncé, too, is wearing a gown tonight that is drawing comparisons to another star. Her nearly nude and bejeweled dress is reminiscent of Britney Spears’ famously see-through “Toxic” bodysuit. That’s often the case with the fashion life cycle: Everything old eventually becomes new again. Check out photos of Kardashian, Beyoncé, and Cher at tonight’s Met Gala and in years’ past below. What do you think of the similarities?
