Keri Hilson Explains Rachel Dolezal Tweets: “She Did Excellent Work For My People,” “We Don’t Know Her Motives”
Keri Hilson is clarifying her stance on Rachel Dolezal. As Gossip Cop reported, Dolezal is the president of the NAACP Spokane chapter who came under fire this week after her parents revealed she is Caucasian and has been passing herself off as black for years.
A number of celebrities weighed in on the strange story via social media, including Hilson. As Gossip Cop noted, the singer sent a series of tweets Friday saying Dolezal should be “thanked” and deserved “credit” for her work with the NAACP. Many, however, took the comments as Hilson defending Dolezal, who has largely been slammed for her charade.
In response to the criticism, Hilson tweeted a clarification on Saturday. “I don’t defend her, I just don’t like to assume or pass judgement on people’s hearts,” she wrote. “WE don’t really know her motives. Only GOD.” Hilson added in a second message, “Hey, she got outta bed every morning & did excellent work for the advancement/equality of MY ppl. THAT affects me. Let God handle the rest!”
As Gossip Cop reported, other stars who have commented on the controversy range from Kelly Osbourne and Mia Farrow to Montel Williams and Orlando Jones. The NAACP released a statement Friday saying that “racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership,” and that the “Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal’s advocacy record.”
