Kelly Ripa says in a new interview she has forgiven “Live” co-host Michael Strahan and ABC executives for blindsiding her with the news he’s leaving their talk show to join “Good Morning America.” The TV personality acknowledges “people make mistakes,” and doesn’t believe anyone was purposely “out to get” her.

“There’s a part of me that can say, ‘Okay, I understand. This may have been an oversight,'” Ripa tells People about being left in the dark about Strahan’s impending departure. “After 26 years, at this point we are like a family. And sometimes when you are so comfortable with somebody, you may not give them the same consideration as somebody you’re not as comfortable with.”

Still, Ripa feels “people deserve respect” and “fair treatment in the work place,” adding, “People should be treated equally and with dignity.” She notes, “When you’re dealing with big business, it’s easy to forget that you’re dealing with people and that people have feelings.” But despite all the previous tension the situation caused, Ripa says, “I’m not dealing with monsters. I don’t think of anybody as a monster or out to get me.”

As far as Ripa taking the week off after learning of Strahan’s exit, she explains, “People need to understand… I didn’t just not show up. I said, in the room, ‘I am going to take the day off.’ I needed to actually sit and gather information. I needed to make sure I said the appropriate things on TV and didn’t just come out and say whatever.” The rest of the time, as Gossip Cop reported, was a prescheduled vacation.

Ripa further insists she’s excited for Strahan and his new opportunity, and believes “GMA” to be a “perfect match” for his abilities. However, she does state, “What nobody considered is there’s a whole other group of people that it really impacts, because we have to now find another great person.” But Ripa isn’t holding a grudge over the fiasco, saying, “People make mistakes, and we’re all human. We all have these moments, and it’s about how you move forward and how you begin again.”
