Keith Crisco, the man running against Clay Aiken in a tight Democratic congressional primary race in North Carolina, died suddenly on Monday. He was 71. The cause of death has not been determined.

Aiken was leading Crisco, a businessman and onetime North Carolina secretary of commerce, by 369 votes in the state’s Second Congressional District, but the race was too close to call. Both men were awaiting the results of an official canvass of votes by state election officials on Tuesday before deciding how to proceed.

Aiken will now face Republican incumbent Renee Ellmers for the seat in Congress.
