On Sunday’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” estranged spouses Kris and Bruce Jenner butted heads over their separation as Kylie became distant, and Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick thought they struck it (extra) rich.
The episode kicked off with Bruce reluctantly getting a haircut at Kris’ urging, and his wife of 23 years was upset when the finished result amounted to barely a trim of his long locks.
“Just because Bruce and I are separated doesn’t mean I don’t want him to look and feel his best,” insisted Kris.
Khloe observed, “My mom and Bruce definitely still bicker like they’re under the same roof. Bruce has been doing things everyone else’s way for a long time, and I think he’s just sick of it.”
Kris worried that Bruce was going to get “too thin” when she found him in her kitchen eating a sandwich as he sulked about Kylie not wanting to spend time with him and Kendall traveling for her modeling career.
“I just feel bad because I don’t want Bruce to feel lonely,” Kris told the camera, later saying that she wanted to be sure he stayed “engaged” as they attempt co-parenting and didn’t fall into “seclusion.”
She later showed up at Bruce’s Malibu “bachelor pad” with groceries, and he insisted he was “doing just fine.”
“This is exactly why I’m not living under the same roof as Kris,” Bruce complained to the camera. “I don’t need her to tell me what to do at all.”
For her part, Kylie complained to Khloe and Kim that her dad expected to just hang out with no advanced planning, and wasn’t too receptive when Khloe pointed out that Bruce is just trying to stay active in her life now that he’s living elsewhere full-time.
Kris and Kylie went on to give Bruce a last-minute invite to join them at yoga, “because it would be a lot of fun to do as a family,” and he agreed as long as it wouldn’t “take too long.”
But instead of being a pleasant joint activity, Kris found him “so disruptive” as he kept making little comments throughout the class and complaining that it was running to close to his tee time.
“This is not my idea of being close to my daughter,” Bruce said defensively — before ditching the class altogether.
The trio made another attempt at quality time together at a rock climbing venue, where Kris called Kylie out for taking her clothing without asking.
Kylie shot back, “Mom, if you really piss me off, I’m going to leave if you don’t stop talking to me.”
But before they were even completely registered, Kylie bailed, claiming she was in a “bad mood.”
“She’s 16 and she’s cranky. What can I tell you?” Kris told an upset and mad Bruce, prompting him to snap, “Don’t make excuses for her!”
Kris kept trying to defend Kylie’s abrupt exit, but Bruce wasn’t having it.
The matriarch later organized a private family cooking course, enlisting Kylie, Kourtney, Khloe and Kim, “so that if one kid storms off,” she had “backup.”
Bruce was less than enthused, and became even less interested as Kris tried to instruct him as he made bok choy.
It all came to a head after the meal, when Bruce told her, “One of the reasons I enjoy living out in Malibu and being apart is because you have a tendency to be kind of controlling, and I just want you to know I don’t need that my life.”
Kris explained to the camera, “I’m a caretaker. I want to take care of him, and I always will. But maybe sometimes my intentions come across too strong, especially now that we’re not living together.”
She vowed to let the former Olympian “fend for himself.”
At a lunch with Kylie and Khloe, Bruce accused them of being “vain” for taking photos of themselves all the time, and pondered whether Kendall’s modeling jobs were truly successful.
He then started complaining about Kris.
“She’s always been kind of controlling. I think a lot of that is that I allowed her to be controlling over the years,” he told the girls.
He went on to call it “frustrating” that no one wants to do any of the things he enjoys.
Khloe saw both sides, and Kylie sat quietly, but told the camera, “I didn’t even realize how much it hurts my dad when Kendall and I don’t see him. I feel really bad so I’m definitely going to make more of an effort to try to see him.”
She followed through by visiting him at surfing outing, and Bruce was pleased that Kris backed off, believing it gave “Kylie and me the space to naturally find time to spend together.”
Meanwhile, Kourtney and Scott had found a painting when cleaning out his late parents’ house, and Kourt had the artwork flown to Los Angeles to have it appraised, believing it was an original Modigliani worth millions and millions.
Kourtney annoyed Scott as she impenitently waited for the painting to arrive, insisting they were “sitting on a fortune.”
Scott lamented to the camera, “In my mind, I can’t imagine this painting being real and just sitting around. It doesn’t make sense.”
When the art piece finally arrived, cousin CeCe called it a “masterpiece” while Scott pointed out its imperfections.
“Look, I hope you’re right…,” he told Kourtney. “It’s worth the dream [but] I just can’t handle the letdown when it’s not.”
Kourtney disregarded his point of view, and later tried to get Khloe to share in her excitement.
Khloe agreed with at least getting it appraised, even though it was “hideous,” and Kourtney arranged for an art appraiser to come to the house.
“It’s a great piece,” the man said before adding, “It’s the real thing.”
The appraiser explained why he thought so, saying the subject matter, brush strokes and signature were all “dead-on,” but suggested they have it sent to researchers to further examine.
Scott admitted to feeling “a little tingly” at the news, now believing they possibly have a “gold mine.”
Recent auctions showed similar paintings going for $40-80 million, and the two began dreaming of an (even) grander life.
“Scott is planning every dollar and how he’s going to spend it,” Kourtney said in a confessional, admitting that him “getting carried away” was making her “freak out a little” despite her earlier over-the-top enthusiasm.
The couple had another expert, an art conservator, check out the painting and look for “red flags,” but the guy admitted he was unsure and needed to bring it to a lab.
Days later, Kourtney and Scott received a letter with the official news that… it was a fake, an older copy from the mid-1900s made with a type of pigment that wasn’t around during Modigliani’s time.
It had, if anything, “limited financial value.”
“Well, I guess I won’t be getting that private jet after all,” quipped Scott. “You win some, you lose some.”
Next week, another Jenner clashes with her parents — Kendall!
