Katy Perry is under fire for what some observers are calling a “racist” performance at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

The pop star sang “Unconditionally” while wearing a geisha-inspired costume and using a set with a mixture of Chinese and Japanese imagery.

Perry’s powdered face and traditional wear rubbed many people the wrong way.

A Wall Street Journal post blasted the singer for illustrating her song “about being a doormat” with her “fauxriental look.”

“Perry’s whiteface/yellowface performance [was] a harsh reminder of how deeply anchored the archetype of the exotic, self-sacrificing ‘lotus blossom’ is in the Western imagination,” wrote the outlet.

The Atlantic said Perry’s performance “needs to be called out” because “stereotypes remain harmful.”

The article says that her show opener was “not a celebration” of Asian culture, but rather “the performance equivalent of skimming a Wikipedia page, not a tribute based in any deeper understanding or desire for accuracy.”

“It was the visual, boppy, awards show equivalent of saying ‘It looks like fun to be an Asian!’ without a scrap of cultural sensitivity,” slammed Australian Cosmopolitan. “She pretty much just stopped short of sticky-taping her eyelids to her temples to make her eyes slant.”

If you haven’t watched the performance yet, please take a look below.

What do you think — Was Perry’s approach insensitive? Or was it no big deal?
