Katy Perry is using her fame to support education and help fund teachers’ classroom projects.

As she kicks off the North American portion of her “Prismatic World Tour,” the singer has teamed up with Staples for what she’s calling her “Make Roar Happen” initiative, which allows fans to fund the educational projects of their choosing via DonorsChoose.org.

On Thursday, Perry announced Staples’ $1 million donation to her program.

“I’m an American girl that had a dream, executed a dream, came from nothing — and that really is the American dream,” Perry told the Associated Press. “I’m happy to be that example and hopefully inspire other people to do that.”

“I really believe knowledge is power, especially for females,” she explained. “I feel like our education makes us more confident.”

Perry admitted that she “wasn’t raised with a great education,” but now she is taking learning into her own hands.

“I thought, instead of shopping my way around the world, why not educate my way around the world?” she said.

Perry’s plans include visiting museums and national parks during her cross country tour.

“I am relishing being very present,” she said. “I’m relishing living one day at a time.”
