Ledecky now has four Olympic medals, having already won the gold and beating her own world record during the 400-meter freestyle on Sunday. She also won a silver medal in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday. And during the 2012 Olympics in London, Ledecky won gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, in which she’ll be swimming again later this week. NBC is now calling the athlete “the world’s most dominant swimmer,” seeing as she’s amazingly never lost in a major American race.
Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, who won the gold in the women’s 100-meter butterfly on Sunday, placed second, earning the silver medal. And with a strong showing, Emma McKeon of Australia took bronze. Meanwhile, Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, the world record holder in this area, finished in fourth.
Ledecky, who’s only 19-years-old, finished second in Monday night’s semifinals, while Missy Franklin, who won four gold medals during the 2012 Olympics, failed to repeat her performance from four years ago, as she didn’t advance to the finals.
