Katie Holmes Fends Off Tom Cruise Question During ‘Today’ Interview (VIDEO)
Katie Holmes appeared on Tuesday’s “Today” show to discuss her new film Touched With Fire, but had to fend off a question by Matt Lauer that alluded to his infamous interview with Tom Cruise, in which the two sparred over the use of antidepressants. See the video below.
In Touched With Fire, Holmes plays a poet struggling with bipolar disorder. Her character, as noted by Lauer, suffers from “massive swings of emotions, incredible highs and incredible lows.” The “Today” show anchor then posed to Holmes, “It asks the question, is it beneficial to treat these people with drugs? You and I both remember a heated discussion I got into on that subject in this studio.”
Lauer, of course, was referring to his June 2005 interview with Cruise, who called him “glib” for suggesting there were cases in which antidepressants and similar psychiatric drugs have helped people. During the contentious exchange, Cruise, whose religion shies away from antidepressants, also accused Lauer of being irresponsible and uneducated about the topic.
And while Lauer didn’t mention Cruise by name on Tuesday’s “Today,” it was very clear he was referring to Holmes’ ex-husband. But when Holmes was questioned about the same topic of using of medication to treat mental disorders, the actress explained that her new movie “[allows] the audience to make that decision.” Watch Katie Holmes’ full interview with Matt Lauer below.
