Kathie Lee Gifford Apologizes to Wrong Martin Short; Real Actor Forgives Her

In apologizing for her extremely unfortunate on-air mistake with Martin Short, Kathie Lee Gifford made another one.

On Wednesday’s ”Today Show,” Gifford asked Short about his marriage, oblivious to the fact that Short’s wife died of cancer in August 2010.

It was an excruciating moment that she acknowledged — and apologized for — following a commercial break.

But in extending an apology to Short on Twitter, Gifford gaffed again.

She wrote, “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

The sentiments are nice… except that’s not Martin Short’s Twitter.

Oops.

Not a great day for Gifford’s fact-checkers.

It’s worth noting, however, that the real Martin Short has (graciously) responded to the whole situation and forgives Gifford.

“On live television, people make mistakes. There’s no ill will intended. It’s nice to aspire to be kind of delicate,” Short told E! News.

    Ironically, I was outside the Today Show studios yesterday morning and saw her through the window giving the beat-down to several staffers. And here I thought it was because she ran out of wine!

    Good for him being so willing to forgive!!! That’s not always easy, especially with sensitive subjects. I understand we all have bad days, but she really needs to get her facts straight

    it is totally amazing how he just rolled-with-it,,and never skipped a beat being kind to her
    as he answered her obviously ridiculous unprepared question..she was actting like she the whole family so well….yeah marty,,,u just made a ton of new friends who respect your memories of your wife. it would of been sad had you tried to explain to gifford,,,and seen her try to backtrack.
    youre one hell-of-a smart thoughtful man. a rare rare rare breed in this world.
