The Daily Mail is a little slimmer today because the British tabloid had to pay out more than $40,000 to Kate Winslet after libeling the Oscar winner.
Today Winslet was awarded $40,000 in damages, stemming from an article from last January that alleged the actress lied about her exercise regime.
Winslet’s attorney argued successfully that the story, titled “Should Kate Winslet win an Oscar for the World’s most irritating actress?” and which was accompanied by several shots of the actress naked, caused the star a “great deal of distress” and was “simply not true.”
While Winslet was not in court to hear the ruling, she issued a statement that said she was “delighted” that the Daily Mail apologized for “making false allegations about me.” She went on to say, “I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues including diet and exercise… women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy.”
Gossip Cop applauds Winslet for both taking a stand against media outlets that make up stories, and for her belief that people should accept themselves as they are.
