Kate Middleton’s official royal portrait was unveiled on Friday.

Painted by British artist Paul Emsley, Middleton is seen from the chest up in a blue top.

The Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, Prince William, were the first to see the artwork at a private viewing at the National Portrait Gallery in London before it was publicly unveiled.

But while the royal couple was reportedly pleased with Emsley’s work, other observers have offered less than favorable reviews.

Among the criticisms are that Middleton appears to have a somewhat pained expression, and looks substantially older than her 31 years.

I don’t like it. She’s so pretty and they made her look old.

  • anthony_ian

She is a pretty girl and that photo makes her look 15 years older than she is. Boo.

  • justsayn

    the fck tho!

  • Lindsey

I think it looks good! I’d like to see the critics paint something like that…

  • Claire

The eyebrows are too dark and that alone ages her tremendously. They should have have lightened. Her up by making her more youthful & happy looking….thumbs down for me.

  • Victoria

Worst picture of her, she always smiles.
What’s up with the closed mouth, smirk, no teeth, no smile? (ugh!) The artist is fabulous, who ordered this serious head shot; (the Queen)???

  • Marina

It’s not that it’s not good ! She looks amazing in real, but what the painter made somwhat around her eyes, makes her look quite old…

  • Beach Babe

Very unflattering. Not only does it age her, but it omits the glow and personality that has made this pretty woman so endearing.

  • Amber

oh my gosh. That does not look like her. She looks like she is 45 here.. Hope they don’t think that is acceptable. She is a much prettier women than this..

  • Irish Girl

It’s…pretty bad. It’s a rather amateurish job, actually. It looks almost as if the painter was trying to use the sfumato method — if so, it was a spectacular failure. There’s a reason not many people have used that method successfully outside of DaVinci.

Enlarged to see the details, it is really a very beautiful painting. She doesn’t look as aged and there is that familiar sparkle in her eyes. I don’t find photographs of oil paintings to be very appealing or truth to its original work.

It looks like Shit! She look’s 60 years old in that picture. We are not artist for Royalty, we have our opinion and you seem to be the minority here. Guess your the crappy artist that painted that shitty picture.

  • just me

it makes her look like 50-years old woman…WTF?

  • justsaying69

    hate the picture

  • Helen

she looks like a hag in this photo, seriously a redo is a must lol!

  • Monica

That’s what happens when you displeased the queen. Missing the Christmas tradition.

  • Stealthnugget

She looks at least ten years older and those lines under her eyes just increases that. Then there’s that… smirk? It’s hard to say, she might be suffering from indigestion. Either way, it looks bad. Kate looks best when completely neutral or smiling: show off her natural beauty, not this fake-ass stuff. The hair’s nice though.

  • SuzieinSingas

This is awful, such a beautiful, YOUNG lady should not be portraited, as an old, smug, hag. I truly believe that the royal couple are ‘happy’ as they are to polite to be honest.. I have to ask the artist why??

  • Margarita Lopez

    She looks oooooooold… O.o… I don’t like it. Honestly, she looks 50 or something…
And what with the shirt/dress color.
    That painting is lacking light!
