Kanye West On Running For President In 2020: “I Hate Politics”
Kanye West reveals in a new interview more details about his plan to run for president during the 2020 elections, saying that he’d be a different kind of politician because he “hate[s] politics.”
While talking Vanity Fair, the rapper divulges that he’s turned off by the competitive nature of elections. “When I run for president, I’d prefer not to run against someone,” says the rapper. “I would be like, ‘I want to work with you.'”
While West doesn’t officially throw his support behind 2016 Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, he does admit, “I tried for three weeks to get on the phone with him. I was like, ‘This is the most brilliant guy.'” But he goes on to liken the presidential debates to a “gladiator battle,” and feels that it “takes away from the main focus that the world needs help.”
As far as how being elected president would interfere with his music and designing careers, West answers, “I have to stay creative. The whole point is to have someone [in office] that’s creative.” The rapper goes on to explain his theory: “The world can be helped through design,” and so it’s “very important that I continue to design.” But juggling multiple projects while sitting in office wouldn’t be the only difference between West and past leaders. “I hate politics,” he reveals. “I’m not a politician at all. I care about the truth, and I just care about human beings.”
West says the reason he isn’t running for president in the 2016 elections is because he’s not quite ready. “I sit in clubs and I’m like, ‘Wow, I’ve got five years before I go and run for office, and I’ve got a lot of research to do,'” The rapper even acknowledges, “I’ve got a lot of growing up to do.”
