Kanye West Casting “Multiracial Women Only” For Yeezy Season 4
Kanye West is casting models for his Yeezy Season 4 fashion show. But only “multiracial women” can apply.
West posted the casting call on Twitter on Saturday, one day before auditions. The message says in all-caps, “MULTIRACIAL WOMEN ONLY.” Another requirement reads, “NO MAKEUP PLEASE COME AS YOU ARE.” See screengrab below.
Applicants will presumably go before West, who typically picks out every person who participates in his fashion shows and look-books. And those wanting to give it a go will have to get to New York City on short notice, as the casting will take place on Sunday at Jack Studios. The rapper and designer is expected to present his latest Yeezy collection during the first day of New York Fashion Week next Wednesday, September 7.
As Gossip Cop reported at the time, West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion show took place during New York Fashion Week earlier this year. The star combined the presentation with a listening party for his new album, The Life Of Pablo, at Madison Square Garden. The location of the new show has not yet been announced.
A number of Twitter users responded to West’s casting call by questioning the ethnicity requirement. @girlybap replied, “…..Multiracial women only?” @jayserius told the performer, “Ummm Yeezy you got some EXPLAINING TO DO.” @TrillSmith wondered, “So like….how is he determining this? Is there a board to verify they multiracial?”
“do they need to bring their http://ancestry.com dna results to the call or…..,” said @BriMalandro. @aringarianas also asked, “why only multiracial?…. like no black woman? or latina.” A user with the handle @kanye also posited, “..so no black women??”
@baroqueenDJ questioned, “is it okay to specify race like that? and @KylieJenner was in your shows and she’s white… just saying :/.” But @coraygeous remarked, “can’t wait for the media to blow this one out of proportion!!!” Indeed, earlier this year, a controversy erupted after a casting call for Hamilton specified “nonwhite men and women” only.
At the same time, other projects have been accused of white-washing by filling ethnic roles with white actors, while others have criticized the lack of opportunities in the entertainment industry for people of color. Gossip Cop will update should West clarify. He is pictured above at the Yeezy Season 2 show nearly a year ago, and the new casting call is below.
