Kanye West Asks World: “Is The Word BITCH Acceptable?”

(GettyImages.com)

Kanye West asked his Twitter followers a loaded question on Sunday.

He wrote, “I usually never tweet questions but I struggle with this so here goes… Is the word BITCH acceptable?”

West continued, “To be more specific, is it acceptable for a man to call a woman a bitch even if it’s endearing?”

“Even tying it in question form it’s (sic) still feels harsh,” added the hip-hop superstar, who recently penned his song “Perfect Bitch” about girlfriend Kim Kardashian, intending the word as a compliment.

West then wondered aloud about how the term compares to another, far more dangerous word that’s ubiquitous in rap.

He asked, “Has hip hop conditioned us to accept this word? Do we love this word as much as we love the word NI*** in an endearing way?”

“Here’s the age old question, would we refer to our mothers as bitches? [Would] we call our fathers ni***** or better yet N***AS?” continued West.

West asked his Twitter followers whether, if the N-word is “such a positive word, why do we feel so uncomfortable for white people to say it, even with a hall pass?”

Then, getting back to the question at hand, he pondered, “Is it ok to use bitch as long as we put BAD in front of it? Like you a BAD BITCH.”

So why is this all coming up now?

West explained, “I was recently questioned about the use of the word BITCH in my music and initially was offended by anyone questioning anything in my music… I will admit that I sometimes go back [and] omit cursing from my records. I like to use profanity as a tool and not a crutch.”

He then wrote, “I’m not tweeting to say what we need and what we don’t… I just wanted to think out loud with you guys today… #THEWORDBITCH.”

There you have it.

How do you feel about West’s question and the use of that word?

Its not a word to be used in any way. But thats not gonna stop Kanye from using that or the word nigga. So whats the point in asking?

I haven’t been a Kanye fan in a long time, but I might change my mind. It’s good he’s questioning this. Not many rappers really care too much and do use curse words as a crutch when they have nothing real to say, they are just filler words. Lupe Fiasco has a song called “B***h Bad” which talks about how that word affects youth.
The main reason I don’t listen to rap is because of the excessive use of curse words, mostly it’s not even needed. I applaud him to for at least addressing this topic.

I’ll call my female friends bitches, but in a “fun” context. Like, “let’s get this party started, bitches” or something like that.

I’ve never heard my husband refer to me as a bitch in an endearing way, so I can’t say if I’d have a problem with it or not. Again, I think it’s all in the context.

  • alexstorm

I like to use that endearing word like this “Its Labor Day bitches, let the fun begin”!!!
He is such a famewhore, he will tweet anything for attention! OK so stop it BITCH!!!

  • Sibyl

The only woman who thinks bitch is a term of endearment is a woman with no self-respect.

  • Anonymous

A bitch is a female dog. Did this guy go to school? And for the record, butting into someones acceptance speech isn’t acceptable either. What an idiot.

  • jenny

to answer your question…his first album was call ‘the college dropout’….no he didnt go to school

  • Anonymous

Thanks Jenny, that explains a lot

Sigh…does he have management or yes-management? I wouldt want the job as his publicist but then again he does a pretty good job keeping his name in everyone’s mouth (good or bad) all day long!

I’m totally impressed Kanye would ‘ask.’ I would be very impressed if listening to the answers, changed his mind about the term. Women don’t seem to see themselves as ‘enough’ in this world, and it would be ‘nice’ if he were a ‘part of bringing’ our collective
consciousness into expressing more ‘respect’ towards the female race in general. I see a lot of kindness in his face, I’d like to be ‘right’ about that. He looks like a sweet boy who would treat a woman, like a lady, and not like a ‘bitch.’ As to, ‘well it is only words,’ some words
deserve to be, private words. Putting them out on display, it’s not necessary.

this nitwit should delete his twitter account the only kind of woman that thinks bitch is a term of endearment is either one with no self respect/worth or a desparate fame whore like his supposed girlfriend Kim Kardashian. if him & Claire Newman were at the same charity event and he made a pass at her she would ignore his self indulgent ass because she takes her wedding vows seriously just as her mother did.

  • Ed

ONLYIF IT’S USED WHEN REFFERING TO KANYE OR KIM.

  • KnowledgeIsPower

Is calling your mother a Bitch acceptable? (Yes, I am aware his mother passed) Treat women the way you would want your Mother/Sister/Daughter treated. Then he wouldn’t have to ask this ridiculous question.

  • Anonymous

Only an idiot like him would ask such an idiotic question, but then what kind of an upbringing did he have.

    Dear Kanye (and others),

Those are excellent and thoughtful questions. I’ve been studying this issue for many years. Here’s what I’ve learned, FWIW.

As with any slang term, if the word is still being widely used in a negative context — especially harshly negative ones — then no, it’s not widely acceptable in public, so it’s not advisable to use it.

This is the case even if, within a small group, the term’s real meaning may be well understood.

Indeed, using easily/likely misunderstood words like that — which are generally said to proclaim that you belong to that group — not only *won’t be understood* by the vast majority of listeners, but will also tie the entire group to the negative sense of that word. This is because, given a lack of information, people generally assume the worst, which plays out in several ways.

In the case of the N word, this has, is, and will continue to have a shockingly negative impact, on the specific person, that specific group, as well as whoever the people outside the group imagine it might relate to, which in this case, likely encompasses all African Americans.

Is the heightened racism in the country at this time directly related to black hipsters’ use of the N word? Not entirely. But partially.

When people don’t understand you, they don’t think “Wow, I’m not as cool or informed as you are.” Rather, they assume you’re an idiot, a fool, or an intentionally-evil person.

For the record, even if you are trying to be (or trying to *appear* to be) any of those three, it’s generally more effective — and advantageous to you personally and any groups you belong to — to encourage people to think otherwise. Because, again, they generally won’t fear you, or whatever effect you imagine that impression will have, so much as they will ignore and avoid you — write you off as negligible.

So using words like those doesn’t give you more influence, overall, it makes you lose influence. A nobody.

  • Ela

No! It’s not acceptable but for Kim we’ll make an exception *_-

Are we supposed to believe this ignorant slob is asking the world a sincere question? He is having an affair with one of the biggest “Bitches” in the world, next to her Mother. Bitch and Whore are very appropriate words in his life because that is all he knows.
