Justin Bieber In Men’s Health: “I Dont Want To Lose That Sense Of Purity” (VIDEO)
Justin Bieber showcases the new and seemingly improved version of himself in the new issue of Men’s Health. In the cover story, called “The Reinvention of Justin Bieber,” the superstar reflects on the growing pains that have tarnished his image over the last two years.
Bieber’s interview with the magazine was conducted earlier this year, and he acknowledged, “This has really been a big year for me, as far as figuring stuff out. This is almost like a full 180 from how I was. Yesterday — a year from yesterday — I was in jail.” Bieber attributes his missteps to the pressure of worldwide fame. “I had to grow up so quick. And it was almost like I grew up for the public, but I didn’t necessarily grow up. There were things I had to do, as far as the way I had to make relationships, and conversation, but as far as actually growing up, there were a lot of things I missed out on,” he reflects.
Bieber further says of his bad behavior, saying, “You feel like you wanna grow up and you gotta prove yourself. Hey, man, you don’t need to prove yourself. I didn’t know that, though.” Looking at his life now, the singer shares, “It’s good to really take a step back and be appreciative and understand that life brought me to an incredible place.”
That’s not to say Bieber, who was a month shy of turning 21 when the interview was conducted, wants to give up all youthful aspects of his life. “It’s funny. I still feel… like a kid. I just still feel young. I don’t feel like I’m almost 21. At all,” he says. Bieber also tells the magazine, “There’s a part of me that I don’t ever want to grow up. I want to always remain… to have that sense of purity inside of me where I don’t… I don’t want to lose that sense of purity.”
“Change is uncomfortable. Write that down,” Bieber instructs his interviewer. He adds, “It’s good to be a bit easy on yourself. Not that you’re just like doing whatever you want, but easy on yourself in that you’re not going to figure everything out overnight, and figure everything out on your own. You’re going to need help, and you’re going to need time.”
The spotlight on Bieber isn’t wavering, though, and that can make things tricky. Take one of his most infamous incidents as an example. The star says, “My house got raided at the start of last year,” he told us. “That’s when everything changed. Because it didn’t get raided for drugs or anything. It got raided because I egged someone’s house… I don’t know, it was really weird. No one’s ever gotten raided for eggs, ever. It’s the first time.”
And Bieber admits he sometimes wishes he could just disappear. “I wish I had the Batman thing where people didn’t know I was Bruce Wayne. Like I had a costume or something,” he says. But it’s kind of hard to blend in when your face is often everywhere. Bieber says, “I never thought I’d see my own billboard in on Sunset, in Hollywood. I remember just thinking that I’d never even go to Hollywood, living in a small town in Canada, just like watching TV. That was never even a thought.”
Bieber says the biggest misconception about him is that he’s self-centered, but notes that he is a perfectionist, and once again compares himself to Michael Jackson, who was a star unlike any other. Bieber seems to be suggesting there’s no one else like him on the scene currently, and tells Men’s Health, “I’ve always been different, and I haven’t been afraid to be different.”
The Canadian even says his many tattoos are “like a cover for me being a softy.” He also confesses, “I’m very much a relationship guy. I like to bounce ideas off the person that I love. I like having a real connection…” But what does Bieber find sexy on a woman? “I really like jean shorts and a tank top. Or spandex,” he says.
Bieber deems Ben Affleck his bromance crush (“I this his vibe is cool”), says he sings Alanis Morissette in the shower, and claims he can solve a Rubik’s cube “in less than a minute” because it’s just a “mathematical algorithm.” He also reveals he was a “pitbull” in middle school, unafraid to take on his bullies, saying, “I was small but I could hold my own.”
What’s Bieber’s approach these days? He gives a telling hint when revealing the plans for his next tattoo. “I want ‘LL’ tatted right here [chest]. When you’re Low, Lift. Because we often want to keep our heads down. But we should lift our heads,” he says. The full interview hits newsstands on March 17.
