Justin Bieber Knocks Himself Off Top Of U.K. Christmas Chart For Charity Song
Justin Bieber has knocked himself off the top of the charts for Christmas. The singer was officially beaten out Friday by the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir for the crown of the number one Christmas song in the U.K. for 2015. Bieber, however, was in the lead for the top spot until he sent out a tweet on Wednesday, asking his fans to buy the choir’s charity single, “A Bridge Over You,” instead of his song, “Love Yourself.”
In the end, “A Bridge Over You” had 127,000 sales, while Bieber’s “Love Yourself” single came up with 97,000. All proceeds from the NHS Choir’s song are going to health charities across the U.K. The choir said in a statement, “We are absolutely overwhelmed and couldn’t be happier.”
Choir member and children’s doctor Katie Rogerson also admitted, “It’s just ridiculous that it’s the NHS versus Justin Bieber, but that’s all in the jolliness of it.” For his part, Bieber tweeted, “Just heard the news. Amazing. That is what Christmas is all about. @Choir_NHS congrats!! Very cool.”
As Gossip Cop previously reported, “Love Yourself” had a 3,000 sale lead on Tuesday over “A Bridge Over You.” But at the urging of the singer’s manager Scooter Braun, Bieber took to Twitter and told his fans to buy the charity single instead of his. “I’m hearing this UK Christmas race is close… but @Choir_NHS single is for charity,” Bieber tweeted, adding, “So for 1 week it’s ok not be #1. Let’s do the right thing & help them win. It’s Christmas.”
Bieber fans shouldn’t feel sorry for him, though. He still finished with three of the top five positions on the U.K. Christmas chart. “Love Yourself” came in at number two, “Sorry” finished at number three, and “What Do You Mean” rounded out the top of the list at number five.
