Justin Bieber Beats One Direction For Number One Album With “Purpose”
As Gossip Cop reported, Bieber released Purpose on November 13, the same day One Direction released Made In The A.M. Both were highly-anticipated albums, and the superstar acts pulled out all the stops when it came to promotion. And over the last week, everyone has waited with baited breath to find out who would score the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
On Friday, it was revealed the honor went to Bieber and Purpose. The singer’s longtime manager Scooter Braun was the first to break the news, posting an image on Instagram that read, “OUR WORK IS DONE HERE.” He wrote in the caption, “#1 album #PURPOSE @justinbieber @sb_projects People stopped believing. We didn’t. Like I said…we love being the underdog. Thanks for believing with us and believing in him. Congrats Jb. That’s one amazing album. Welcome back.”
Indeed, Bieber’s comeback can no longer be doubted. And Purpose joins the star’s other number one albums: My World 2.0, Under The Mistletoe, Never Say Never: The Remixes, Believe, and Believe Acoustic. The official sales figures were revealed on Sunday, and Bieber sold 522,000 Purpose albums, which is not only the most of 2015, but the most since Taylor Swift’s 1989 was released in October of last year and the most for a male artist since Eminem’s last offering in 2013.
One Direction, meanwhile, sold 402,000 albums. Unfortunately, Bieber’s run at the top of the chart is expected to only last one week. Adele dropped 25 on Friday, and she’s projected to shake up the music industry with record-breaking sales. Still, Bieber gets to have the last laugh for now.
As Gossip Cop previously reported, after it was revealed One Direction would be sharing Bieber’s release date, the singer seemingly shaded the boy band with a video in which he said, “The face you make when you come out with an album the same day as Justin Bieber,” before making a very frightened look,” as if 1D should’ve been scared. Louis Tomlinson then seemingly mocked Bieber in response with a clip in which he said, “That face you pull when you’re playing the last night at the O2,” and then makes a look similar to the one Bieber had done, as if Bieber should’ve been jealous.
But the battle isn’t a total Bieber victory, as One Direction did manage to top the UK Top 40 Albums chart, and Made In The A.M. is now the fast-selling album of the year there, as Gossip Cop previously reported.
