Juan Pablo Defends R-Word “Joke,” Blames “Different Culture” as Excuse

Juan Pablo Galavis once again found himself in hot water on Thursday night, and once again blamed the ensuing controversy on his background.
“The Bachelor” star retweeted a follower’s poor attempt at a “joke” — one that used the word “retarded” and seemed to make fun of people with mental handicaps (see below).
After writing that he “LOVED it,” Galavis defended himself against accusations of ignorance and insensitivity.
“People, try to be HAPPY and enjoy JOKES and SARCASM…” wrote the reality star.
He added, “In Venezuela the R word is USED commonly and by NO means is to OFFEND anyone… #Relax #DifferentCulture #Respect.”
Though Galavis ended up deleting the retweet amid the outcry, he went on tell followers to “open your mind” and “learn culture.”
In January, the soccer player came under fire after saying there shouldn’t be a gay “Bachelor,” because homosexuals are more “pervert.”
He later blamed his word choice on a language barrier, though ABC and the show’s producers condemned his remarks.
Galavis has also been hit with strong criticism from his own “Bachelor” contestants, who have accused him of being disingenuous.
