Jovan Belcher of Kansas City Chiefs Commits Suicide After Killing Girlfriend
Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs killed himself at the team’s facility early Saturday, shortly after he murdered his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins.
The couple had a three-month-old daughter.
Authorities have yet to confirm a motive in the murder-suicide.
Belcher’s mother, visiting the couple, alerted police after her son shot Perkins multiple times.
The 22-year-old new mother died at a nearby hospital.
Belcher, a 25-year-old linebacker, drove to the Arrowhead complex where the Chiefs are based, held a gun to his head in front of personnel including head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli, thanked them for all they’d done for him, and pulled the trigger.
His suicide occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. local time.
There were no other injuries at the Chiefs facility.
“The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today’s events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement.
“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted,” Hunt said. “We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization.”
The team plans to go ahead with its game on Sunday at noon after consultation between the National Football League and Chiefs higher-ups.
Last May, former NFL star Junior Seau shot and killed himself at the age of 43.
