“So You Think You Can Dance” Star Joshua Allen Leaves After Domestic Violence Charges
“So You Think You Can Dance” star Joshua Allen left the current season due to domestic violence charges. He’s now facing more than 10 years in prison.
As Gossip Cop has reported, season 13 of the FOX competition is dubbed “The Next Generation” for its focus on aspiring stars between the ages of 8 and 13. But 10 “All-Stars,” including Allen, who won season 4, were invited to participate as mentors. As we previously noted, that entailed evaluating all the contestants at a Dance Academy, before each pro chose one with whom to partner.
Allen selected 12-year-old hip-hop dancer Sheaden. But on the season’s first live episode this past Monday, host Cat Deeley announced that Allen would no longer be participating, and Sheaden was now working with a different alum, Marko Germar. No reason for Allen’s sudden departure was announced.
Then on Wednesday, a Twitter user accused the show’s producer and head judge, Nigel Lythgoe, of having “something to do” with the unexpected exit. The fan wrote, “Pls have the graciousness to respond to our question @dizzyfeet .. WHERE IS @Joshu_Allen? Rumor is you have something to do with it. Do you?” Lythgoe not only retweeted the message, but also replied, saying, “As far as I am aware his decision was private. I would suggest, therefore, that you ask Joshua.”
Now one day later, a report says Allen is facing charges for allegedly attacking his girlfriend on more than one occasion. It’s claimed the dancer, who reportedly already has a domestic violence conviction, tried to strangle his significant other in April, a violent act that also allegedly violated a restraining order. Then in June, he reportedly followed her into a coffee shop, and threw a glass vase at a woman who attempted to intervene.
It’s further alleged Allen trashed the establishment before being stopped by other patrons. TMZ says he’s since been charged with battery and vandalism misdemeanors, in addition to felony assault with a deadly weapon, and two felony counts of willful injury to his girlfriend. If convicted of all the charges, he could be behind bars for more than 10 years.
It’s unclear if the criminal case let to Allen’s firing from “SYTYCD.” Over the last few days, he’s retweeted messages from fans upset about his disappearance from the show. Gossip Cop has reached out to a FOX rep for comment.
