Josh Charles opened up on Monday’s “Late Show with David Letterman” about his decision to leave “The Good Wife” and his shocking death on the series.

The actor, who played beloved character Will Gardner on the drama, told Letterman, “It’s been one of the best gigs for me in my entire career. But at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was just ready to move on.”

Charles said it was decided a full year ago that he was exiting the show, which gave the creators time to give a “really proper goodbye to the character.”

The actor told fans, “I just want to say to all of the fans that I really appreciate your comments… It’s meant a lot. I get invested in characters in TV shows, too.”

As for what’s next on his plate, Charles admitted, “I have no idea.”
