Jordan Smith “Somebody To Love” Number One On iTunes, Knocks Out Adele
Jordan Smith is just starting his career, but he just pulled off a huge accomplishment. “The Voice” frontrunner has knocked Adele out of the number one spot on the iTunes Top 100 chart.
Adele’s single “Hello” has dominated the chart lately, so much so that Smith’s coach Adam Levine even joked about the superstar standing in their way on Monday’s episode. But after that pre-taped rehearsal footage aired, Smith gave a live performance of Queen’s “Somebody To Love” that will likely go down in history as one of the best ever for a reality music competition. Backed by a gospel choir, the contestant showed off his incredible vocal range and intense emotion, leading to a standing ovation from all the coaches (see video below).
Levine even called it “one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” as Gossip Cop noted. But it wasn’t just the panel who loved the performance. Viewers did, too, sending fans flocking to iTunes to download Smith’s studio recording of the track. And so many people purchased the single that by noon on Tuesday, Smith had become the iTunes Top 100 chart’s new number one artist.
Interestingly, Smith actually covered Adele earlier in the season. As Gossip Cop reported, the aspiring star performed “Set Fire To The Rain” for the Knockout round back in October. Smith’s version of that hit is currently at 88 on the iTunes chart. And while it’s likely Adele’s “Hello” will take back the crown, Smith will always be able to say he once unseated one of the biggest artists in the world.
On Tuesday night’s live results show, Smith will find out if he’s one of the four “Voice” contestants who will compete in next week’s season 9 finale. While that seems all but a sure thing, five artists will be eliminated in an unprecedented bloodbath. (UPDATE: Smith made it into the finale!)
