National Enquirer Tries to Cell Phone-y John Mayer Story

To hear the National Enquirer tell it, John Mayer could be in a lot of hot water over a lost cell phone.

“Talk about sweating bullets!” yells the tabloid, which cites a “spy” as claiming Mayer is frantic after misplacing a phone that supposedly contains photos and videos of some well-known ex-girlfriends.

“OMFG!… There are things on that phone that could get me – and some of my famous friends – in serious trouble!” the allegedly “shaken star’s telling pals.”

What a convenient, tidy, completely unnatural sound bite!

The tab says Mayer “realized his cell was missing during a New York trip,” and was unable to find it. The Enquirer speculates about whether it has super-private footage of Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and other famous Mayer “date mates.”

Unfortunately for the magazine, the only “lost” item in this phone-y article is accuracy.

“That’s a completely made-up story,” Mayer’s rep tells Gossip Cop.

Hmm, maybe there was static on the line when the Enquirer‘s so-called “sources” checked in with the tab.
