UPDATE:
Hours after apologizing on Twitter for using a racial epithet in a Playboy interview, an emotional John Mayer told the crowd at his concert last night at the Sommet Center in Nashville: “I quit the media game. I’m out. I’m done. I just want to play my guitar.”
Moments before, the musician, who called himself a “creep,” said he’s made inappropriate comments in the past, and that “In the quest to be clever I completely forgot about the people that I love and the people that love me.” He added that he feels “absolutely terrible” about his statements.
Earlier in the day, Mayer took to Twitter to say he was sorry for using a racial slur in a Playboy interview.
“Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview,” Mayer wrote, “I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself.”
“It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it,” he continued, “Because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.”
Mayer’s controversial use of the word came when discussing in the Playboy chat his relationship to the black community. He also made racially charged remarks about his sexual habits.
In that same interview, when talking about ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson, Mayer brashly stated, ”Sexually it was crazy… It was like napalm, sexual napalm.”
Is Mayer forgivable or forgettable?
