John Edwards Has Life-Threatening Heart Condition, Says Doctor

John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, according to his doctor.

A cardiologist for the disgraced ex-Senator and onetime presidential candidate wrote two letters to the judge presiding over Edwards’ trial for alleged conspiracy and campaign law violations.

At a hearing on Friday, Judge Catherine Eagles delayed the trial until at least March 26, giving Edwards time to have surgery.

“The public has an interest in a speedy trial, and this case has already been continued twice. Ordinarily, I would try to manage something like this,” said Eagles. “But clearly there are some limitations on Mr. Edwards due to real and serious health issues.”

There were no details about the nature of Edwards’ condition or the type of operation required.

The Democratic vice-presidential candidate in 2004, Edwards has gone through a series of personal and professional scandals in recent years, including fathering a child out of wedlock with Rielle Hunter as he ran for the 2008 presidential nomination.
