“I’m just trying to make it through,” Cena admitted on the morning talk show about his hosting strategy, before joking, “ESPN has taken the steps to make sure I have viable replacements. I’m just trying not to get the gong as I’m the first WWE superstar to host the ESPYs.” Cena went on to admit that hosting the annual awards show, which recognizes achievements in sports, was a “tremendous honor,” despite the “pressure” he was feeling. “Worst case scenario, I’m gonna have fun,” said the wrestler.
Cena also went on to reveal that U.S. Army Sergeant and gold-medalist Paraswimmer, Elizabeth Marks, will be this year’s recipient of the prestigious Pat Tillman Award. Marks suffered a severe hip injury while serving as a combat medic in Iraq, leaving her without feeling in one of her legs, in addition to other health complications. She went on to win four gold medals at the second Invictus Games earlier this year, and made headlines when she gave back one of her awards to Invictus founder Prince Harry.
Cena also spoke about his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, noting “the power of putting a smile on somebody’s face… Even if it’s just for a day.” He added, “You provide that hope for them to move forward.” The 2016 ESPYS will air live on ABC on July 13. Watch Cena’s full “GMA” interview below!
