John Arthur Greene “American Idol” Audition Video: Broadway Actor Confesses To Killing Brother With Gun — WATCH
John Arthur Greene had an emotional audition on Wednesday’s “American Idol,” opening up about the death of his brother. Watch below.
Greene revealed his 12-year-old brother died while they were playing “cops and robbers” when he was just 8 years old. Unaware that the gun they were toying with was loaded, he fatally shot his sibling. “I held my brother and watched him die,” Greene confessed. “I knew it when I had him in my arms. I knew he was gone, and it was my fault.”
The tragedy has inspired Greene to live a meaningful life through music, and the 26-year-old North Carolinian has worked as an actor in Matilda on Broadway. For his audition, the contestant covered Keith Urban’s 2002 song “Someone Like You.” The country superstar was pretty stone-faced during the performance, but exclaimed at the end, “Alright!”
Harry Connick, Jr., however, wasn’t impressed. “I think you have a very strong voice, but I’m just thinking, what else is there?” he told Greene. Jennifer Lopez commented, “I’m not sure you’re going to be able to hang at a certain point with some of the others, but I do think you have something.”
Urban agreed, saying, “I got a feeling you’ve got other sides to you.” So after Connick gave a “no” and Lopez offered a “yes,” Greene made it through with Urban’s second “yes.” “I’m curious to know what else you could do,” the judge told him. Check out the video below.
