Joey Cook “Miss Independent” American Idol Video: Keith Urban Gives Ovation For Reworked Kelly Clarkson Cover – WATCH!
Joey Cook received a standing ovation from Keith Urban on “American Idol” on Wednesday for the way she reworked Kelly Clarkson’s “Miss Independent.” Check out the video below!
The night had a special Clarkson theme paying tribute to the very first “American Idol” winner, who was on hand to mentor the contestants. All the singers had to choose tracks from the Clarkson song book to perform, and Cook took the stage with “Miss Independent” after finding out she had received enough votes after last week’s “80s Night” to make the Top 8. Cook warned before the performance, “I completely changed her song. I have a habit of doing that.”
Indeed, Cook has become rather known for the way she reinvents well-known tracks, and her big band, jazzy take here paid off once again. After Urban gave her an ovation, the judge told Cook, “The great thing about what you do with songs is that you don’t just change them, you just completely build a new one.” The country superstar went on, “You make me hear a lyric in a way I’ve never heard before. You have so much artistic weight and you do it effortlessly.”
Jennifer Lopez said she agreed, telling Cook, “I think that’s one of the best performances of the night, and just because of the reason that it is so you.” And Harry Connick Jr. gave the contestant an “A+ from me for bravery and for going sort of left of center in terms of the arrangement.” Harsh Harry’s one quibble? He wished Cook’s performance had a less “novelty” appearance, to show that jazz can be modern.
