Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Joe Paterno Funeral

(GettyImages.com)

The Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest Joe Paterno’s funeral.

Margie Phelps, the WBC’s lawyer and daughter of leader Fred Phelps, announced the group’s intention on Twitter.

Known for their vile message of “God Hates F*gs” and policy of disturbing the bereaved, the “Church” now intends to disrupt Paterno’s ceremony.

Phelps tweeted,“’Penn State Penn Rape’ rings in Joe Paterno’s ears in hell. He partook of sin for fame & fortune. Worth NOTHING to him now. #PicketFuneral”

It seems the “Church” is targeting the legendary Penn State football coach because of his ties to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, which ended Paterno’s 46-year tenure at the school.

Paterno died today at 85.

In the past, the Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to picket other famous people’s funerals, including Elizabeth Taylor.

Westboro the cultic church full of DEMONS. This is from a real Christian.

  • Canuceeit

Whoaaa to the Westboro church as they do not interpret the Bible well. Let one amongst you throw the stone that is without sin. I hope they remember that it states in the Bible also “Judge ye not as ye will be judged also.” “Pull the plank from your eye so that you may see. To “picket” a funeral is really low for my fellow mankind to do and not just for Joe Paterno but of all mankind.

  • Denise

People need to leave this family alone. I cannot believe a church is going to do this. This church should be ashamed of themselves!!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4O2M2FMUPR7RSYZR22L2RW4DK4 Andrew

    I agree, but I don’t think I would consider them a church.

  • J_lyn

This “church” really need to get their heads checked, I find it amusing that they think God will happily open his gates for them, when all they have done is spent their lives spreading hate.

  • Hannah

Please don’t let this be true. This family just lost their loved one!

  • Valgard21

I Can only hope the entire Nittany lion Nation comes to block these idiots from spreading hate.. From a Florida State Seminole rest in peace Joe Pa .

Yeah, they’re indefensible scum. But I think we can let them have this one.

Also a real Christian, I have to agree with you. Those crazies give us all a bad name, and I can assure you, that my church has never done such things like this. I saw something about this church on TV once, and it was absolutley sickening. They had a video of a six year old boy (cute little blonde kid, missing his front teeth) and when they newscaster asked him who was going to hell he responded ” fa*s and hundreds and hundreds of Jews”, as well as telling the newcaster he was going to hell, for not accepting God’s word.
The entire story was sickening, and I wish that someone would just stop this. What is being done to their children, and in their community is not fair. Their children, who are pickketing almost get run over by cars, and they say that they need to be prepared to stand by their beliefs.
I for one, have never seen anything so vile and disgusting. I hate to see my religion given a bad name by these guys!

  • Westborough are not Christians

yeah they give us Christians a bad name and its so annoying when we are put in the same category as them! Didnt Jesus die for us (sinners)? Didnt Jesus speak of the power of forgiveness? Seems to me that these twits pick and chose which parts of the bible that suits them and then twist it. Not to worry though, it says in The Word that we will know a false prophet (or organisation) by their contradictions or the way they twist The Word…

well i live 20 mins away from the campus and this area of PA is loyal and tough, and i mean like they will fuck thee guys up and fuck em in the butt at the same time….i suggest they stay away, the cops wont help them….i can guarantee that

How could i even describe this… as a Catholic, i don’t think Westboro Baptism Church should even be called a church, i get the fact that this church has its own beliefs, but to me GOD is not cruel as they picture him to be! This article just breaks my heart and makes me cry because of the fact that there is people who are so cruel and so selfish and that all they think about is anything negative. It’s an embarrassment to even be here right now and just write this up!

I get it what JoePa did was disgusting and shameful, but i feel like he got more punished for this than the guy who actually raped those little kids! But seriously the man is dead and yet this church can’t let this man go in peace???? Its a SHAME A SHAME TO CALL THAT EVEN A RELIGION, ITS A SHAME TO EVEN HAVE THE WORD “CHURCH” BE IN THE SAME SENTENCE AS Westboro Baptism!

btw i didn’t even read this article, i just saw those three words that made my heart ache.

Churches like this are what give christians a bad name. Last I checked there was one God and we are not him. We DO NOT have a heaven or hell to put anyone in. RESPECT his family.

And yet… People the world over will be in shock when the governments turn against religion, starting with all the “Christian” faiths…..

When they act like this they don’t exactly make it a hard decision for the governments do they?

  • jay

I was planning on attending Joe’s funeral anyway, but this just gives me more reason to. The Penn State faithful will not let scum like this disrupt the services for a good and decent man.

  • Nikki_21_2

these idiots dont even want to try that s*** here in PA!! they wont get home they way they got here that you can be sure of!!! And they arent a church they are a cult and they should have all their kids taken away from them ASAP!!!!!!

  • Phweston0269

For the sake of the family and other mourners at the funeral, I pray tht this can be stopped in as peaceful a way as possible. I cant even imagine how painful it would be for them if this cult succeeds in turning this solemn event into a riot.

  • Linda

Any church who stages a protest at a man’s funeral is pure SCUM.

  • Jennifer

Stop giving these nutbags attention! It’s what they crave! I don’t think they give a damn about religion. They just want to get their fat little faces on TV. It’s a handful of kooks. IGNORE THEM and they will eventualy go away.

  • WTF

Apparently the Westboro crowd is unaware that PA, especially Philly, needs little reason to kick the ever-living crap out of people. Westboro has just given them an actual reason. Dips**ts!

  • Jbp7466

What did Joe do that was disgusting and shameful?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Z4YPUTEDBRQ4Z3DZPSHMWVIHHE W. O.

These churchgoers must be the same ones that claim to Christians, go to church every Sunday and sit on the front row. I think we will be socked when we find out just how many of these so called Christians made it to heaven Plus – He who is without sin. let him cast the first stone!!!

There was one of his staff who was technically abusing boys around 15 years old and someone saw it and reported it to him. JoePa instead of reporting it to the authorities he reported it to someone higher than him but after that nothing happened and a lot of people blamed him for what those 15year old boys had to experience from this dude Sandusky (the one who was sexually abusing the boys) for about 4 years or so.

  • Jbp7466

Lily, when all this hell broke loose, Sandusky was not on JoePa’s staff and had not been on his staff for several years. He was still coming on the campus because it is University policy that retired coaches (which he is) can still use the training facilities. Joe had no authority to prohibit him from coming on the campus. I doubt very much that Joe knew he was bring the boys to the showers as he came on campus late at night. When McQueary told Joe what he thought he saw – and he admitted that he did not to into graphic detail to Joe – they went to the campus police. The head of the campus police! Then it was out of Joe’s hands. He is not an investigator and could not interfere with any investigation that was going on. Some say he should have followed up more. There are those on campus – read Board of Trustees and others – who did not like Joe. They thought he had too much influence and they did not want him telling them what to do. If he had pursued this matter (and he probably thought it was being taken care of anyway), they would have delighted in telling him to go pound sand. As for Sandusky, until the ugly facts came out, he was a very well-known and respected citizen of State College. (For those who might not know, State College is the town where Penn State is located). He was admired as a former coach of a nationally-ranked football team. He was praised for founding the Second Mile Foundation that helped at-risk boys. If anybody should have had a clue that something was not quite right, it should have been the parents of the boys. Sandusky would call them up at home; the parents allowed him to pick them up at school; they allowed him to take them to his house overnight; they allowed him to take them on out-of-town trips. He bought them gifts and showed them “where the football team showers”. If you are a parent, would that not raise some red flags? Why is this old man so interested in my 10-year old? Joe did not deserve what he got.

  • vball5

Thanks Jbp7466! I am so disgusted with all the negative remarks that have been given to Joe Paterno, before and now after his death. Very sad to see how cruel people are! He did what he felt was right and you explained it very well!!!

  • Anonymous

The man is dead. Let his family bury him and let him rest in peace.

  • Lgabaldon09

Sure he knew about it and it made him just as guilty but who they FUCK are they as a “church” and people of God if they’re so hateful. It would be morally wrong to disrupt a funeral, think about all the people who DID love him no matter what. Have respect for the living and the dead.

  • Bwshaffer

Real bad idea !!!! I just came home from the viewing. U really wanna piss off 50,000 college kids!!!
