VIDEO: Jodie Foster Emotional Golden Globes Speech About Sexuality & Privacy

VIDEO

(NBC)

Jodie Foster delivered a show-stopping Golden Globes acceptance speech on Sunday, officially coming out of the closet (kind of) while defending her right to privacy after decades in a Hollywood community brought to tears by her emotional address.

VIDEO BELOW

Accepting an honor for lifetime achievement, Foster began in somewhat rambling fashion, speaking about the process of making movies, before turning her attention to the incessant questions about her sexuality and personal life.

Foster essentially came out of the closet — by saying that she really had years ago, to the people closest to her.

She thanked her onetime lesbian partner, and then spoke directly to her mother with words that led audience members to tear up.

She also seemed to imply that she’d be retiring — but backstage, Gossip Cop learned that that’s NOT the case.

“I could never stop acting,” said Foster. “I’m not retiring from acting… I’m actually more into it than I’ve ever been.”

Check out Foster’s historic and memorable speech in the video below!

wow…how much class can this woman have? its just WOW! she is like a magic creature: it doesnt exist. I feel sad that (obviously) she felt the pressure to talk about her sexuality so ppl would stop asking. but, i just love her more after seeing her talk the way she did!

  • CoheedCambria

glad to see people are more dignified over here on GC. TMZ had an article about this too and people were just saying the rudest shit. this was an excellent speech from Jodie and she basically spoke for nearly all of Hollywood.

    Hi Debbie night night

  • Kyle4

The text in the post seems to miss the entire point of her message. She already “officially came out”, just not to a bunch of strangers. She has the right to her private life (one in which her and partner were frequently reported on). Just because she doesn’t hold a televised conference announcing her sexuality doesn’t mean she’s not out.

  • CCBanks

A sad sign of the times.

I’m proud of her! She showed America that all the other in-the closet actors can come out and be supported. That’s its okay to come out because there are going to be people there to support you all the way. Jodie Foster proved to America once again that being GAY is OKAY.

So in summary; Jodie (sort of) confirmed PUBLICLY the gay rumors (yawn), but more importantly she announced that she’s retiring from acting, but will continue to DIRECT. It explains her absence in recent years. Thankfully, she’s one one left (in the can) coming out later this year with Matt Damon,

Jodie Foster came out? now that’s shocking.. So easy for the lesbos.. but how many gay males are in Hollywood, but can’t come out.. sneaking around at night humping guys w.out rubbers. Leaving the wife feeling confused… not to menion infected with syphilis!! what a great country we live in

Finally got to see this though some of the audio was absent. I liked her speech. She came out that way — to me — to point out that the people she’d actually MET in her life and her family & friends knew all along because she attempted to maintain privacy and normalcy in her life. She also pointed out how important it is for celebrities and how they should not have to issue any statements for announcements about what goes on in their public lives. It’s their business — as it should be. Basically — hold on to the ones you love and protect your privacy.

I was also very moved by the message she gave to her mother.

One of the Queen of Hollywood did a perfect speech tonight… I loved it!!

Very excited to heard and watch a Lady like Jodie Foster! She was the best moment of the gala, what a speech!!

Since a young girl she´s one of my favorite for all that she represent, she´s respected, loved by her co-worjkers, all the guild… she lives her life without thinking about others (tabloids), very friends of her friends despite sometimes it´s difficult to defend certains things but like always said we accept friends for like they are and all should to respect this. Tonight, again, she could only thanks family, friends etc and she did, very few times we can see her children, loved words for Cid… but not, also she´s revendicated privacy for all the people and had words for Kristen and young actresses in GG conference. She´s one of the best!! And knowing Rob was there listening all it´s so perfect.

Congratulations for all nominees and winners:)

i done get why is a big deal..She came out of the closet..SO what?..being homosexual is now someting normal..idg why is so shocked to every1..I found her speech very long and boring..I felt sleep, woke up and she was still talking -.-!..those awards was really boring and her speech made it worst..

Jody showed everybody that getting older is getting wiser. It was a great speech from someone who is engaged in protecting her circle of family and friends ( Mel Gibson) . But she needs to realize that the time of being anonymous is over since Monica Lewinsky had an affair with Bill Clinton and he was forced to lie because american presidents are not french where it is mandatory to have a mistress. If you choose to be paid millions because you are an actor you need to know that the public who shells out 15 for a Movie is looking for role models. Right or wrong

  • http://twitter.com/renate2009 gabriele

why is it important, Gays just have a different sex life, thats it.. Nobody needs to know

  • http://twitter.com/renate2009 gabriele

its like getting a Tattoo…no harm done

  • J F

Regardless of what she said, I LOVE that dress!!! Best dress of the night and it fits her perfectly!!

  • Usamed

What does it matter if your gay, stright or bi. She’s a good actor and a good person that should be the only things matter.

  • Luke

I find it amusing that most homophobic people are the ones who are confused and insecure about their own sexuality. Get educated, in this day and age there is no more risk of catching an STI from a gay person then there is from a straight person. If you have ever not used a condom then you pose just as much risk of getting syphilis and passing it on to someone else as a gay person does. Your comment makes you look like an ignorant fool.

  • KagKa

She was trying to prove a point? … or just get those people who bugs her about the issue to know the truth and shut up .. move on.

  • KagKa

Mel G. looked like a puppy … when he was listening and looking at Jodie. :D

  • Janice Schacter Lintz

Enough about her sexuality, we want to know does she wear hearing aids? There was a photo years of her wearing a hearing aid. We need her to discuss her hearing loss if she in fact, has one. It is time someone broke the stigma for people with hearing loss and admitted in a public venue like the Golden Globes that they wear hearing aids.
