Joaquin Phoenix is not such a fan of the Academy Awards.

The actor, whose performance in The Master has led to early Oscars buzz, calls the honors “bulls**t” in the new Interview magazine.

Asked about what he’s going to do when his new movie hits the “awards circuit,” Phoenix replies, ”I think it’s bulls**t,” says Phoenix. “I think it’s total, utter bulls**t, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it.”

He explains, “It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other… It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.”

Phoenix was nominated in the Best Actor category for 2005′s Walk the Line.

It was not fun.

“It was one of the most uncomfortable periods in my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that,” says the actor. “I never want to have that experience again.

He continues, “I don’t know how to explain it — and it’s not like I’m in this place where I think I’m just above it — but I just don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things.”

I agree. Art cannnot be judged as “better” or “worse.” It’s not quantifiable.

    Love him.

  • aya

    finally someone understands !!

  • Just me

I also love him. When will some get it that many actors make movies because they love to and are not in it looking for an award or even a BO success they just want to act in a movie they like.

    I couldn’t agree more!

I couldn’t agree with him more. I respect Joaquin Phoenix even because of this. I don’t even watch any awards shows, it’s all crap to me.

He’s a sore loser because he didn’t win.

The Oscars began as a marketing campaign and really they still are (in addition to stroking the ego of more than Hollywood player). Independent movies are able to get financing to do them well precisely because of the Oscar’s and the added publicity and opportunity to get the film to a wider audience if the film gets awards buzz. The awards circuit probably is a very uncomfortable thing to maneuver in, but a big part of an actor’s job is to help with the marketing of a film and that’s what the Oscar’s is all about. He doesn’t have a smart head on his shoulders, he’s just being an entitled smart ass.

I’m not a fan of this guy at all, but I have to agree with him on this one.

he’s not the first actor or actress to realize that does the quote it’s only fun for five minutes until you get back to your seat and realize it’s only a statue mean anything to any of you and it was a former best actress winner who said that not the press. Phoenix is being a sore loser because he’s been nominated twice and never won

It’s a shame. Phoenix is so talented, but he’s such an idiot. Did anyone see the documentary his brother-in-law, Casey Afflick did on him? Every other word was f….., and he kept snorting coke. This was when he decided to give up acting and switch to rapping. The guy has no talent whatsoever insofar as rapping is concerned. He even got into a fight with some of the audience members, saying he had a million dollars in the bank and what did one guy in the audience have to equal that. Trust me. The guy will be dead like his brother, River, in no time at all. Such a waste of good talent.

I totally agree, their all about who they want to pick and not totally really looking into an actors performance and hard work. Jaoquin should have been selected for some award he did an awesome job portraying Johnny Cash, really awesome! They select the same actors over and over. Granted they may be good actors but let’s give someone else a chance.
