Joan Rivers: Lena Dunham Sends Message It’s OK to “Stay Fat” & “Get Diabetes” (LISTEN HERE)
During her visit to “The Howard Stern Show” on Tuesday, Rivers accused Dunham of sending a dangerous message by being comfortable with her weight. Talking about Dunham’s fashion sense, Rivers asked, “How could she wear dresses above the knee?”
When Stern stepped in to say that Dunham’s whole point is body acceptance, Rivers said, “But that’s wrong! You’re sending a message out to people saying, ‘It’s OK! Stay fat! Get diabetes. Everybody die. Lose your fingers.’”
Rivers also accused Dunham of “hypocrisy,” citing Dunham’s (barely) retouched Vogue cover. “There she was looking gorgeous. You didn’t know it was her,” she said. Rivers still called herself a fan of Dunham, explaining, “I love that she’s funny, I love that she did well… but don’t let them laugh at you physically.”
Rivers’ final plea to Dunham was that, “If you look the way you look, Lena, and that’s fine and you’re funny, don’t say it’s okay that other girls can look like this. Try to look better.”
