Joan Rivers is NOT dead.

The comedy icon was the victim of a death hoax on Twitter today, but she’s ALIVE and WELL.

Gossip Cop has noticed that these sick rumors tend to come in waves (Lady Gaga, Tony Danza and Nelson Mandela have all been declared “dead” through social media in the past week or so).

Hoaxes like these are appalling on the heels of an actual death like Andy Whitfield‘s, let alone the anniversary we collectively marked as a country this past weekend.

There’s enough real pain in the world. We don’t need the Internet’s mini-industry of faux deaths.
