Joan Rivers officially died of anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest — a lack of oxygen to her brain during an endoscopy procedure, the New York City Medical Examiner announced on Thursday.

It was revealed that the show business legend was under sedation with Propofol during the operation when things went awry; her death was described as resulting from a “predictable complication of medical therapy.”

Rivers died at the age of 81 on September 4, a week after going into cardiac arrest and being put into a coma following what was supposed to be a routine procedure to treat acid reflux and evaluate changes to her voice.

After the autopsy results were revealed, Rivers’ daughter Melissa tweeted, “In response to NYC’s Medical examiner’s report, we continue to be saddened by our tragic loss. No further comment at this time.”
