Joan Lunden Bares Bald Head on People During Breast Cancer Battle — SEE PHOTO
Joan Lunden removes her new wig and poses bald in a striking magazine shoot.
The veteran newswoman revealed in June that she has breast cancer, and is now courageously showing the disease’s effects.
Lunden says she decided after her first chemotherapy treatment to cut off her blonde locks, knowing they would fall out eventually.
“Robin [Roberts] told me waiting for your hair to fall out is excruciating. So I didn’t want to wait,” she tells People, explaining, “You know it’s going to happen one of these days and you are wondering how and when, so I just owned it.”
Lunden, however, had more insecurities when it came to baring her naked head for all to see on the cover of a magazine.
She tells the outlet, “I’m almost reluctant to say it because it sounds superficial. But when you lose your hair, it just affects the way that you look at yourself in the mirror. You feel less feminine, pretty or desirable, and it’s not an easy thing to go through.”
Ultimately, though, Lunden saw the opportunity as chance to provide both inspiration and comfort to the millions of women sharing her journey.
“I had to make this big decision about whether or not to do the cover with no hair. It certainly isn’t the comfortable way to go, but I decided I was going to try and help others and show women that this isn’t the end of the world,” she says.
Lunden adds, “You can go on – and that was hugely empowering.”
Gossip Cop wishes Lunden the best.
