Jimmy Kimmel’s revelation about his baby’s surgery sparked a healthcare debate during Tuesday’s “The View.” Watch below.

As Gossip Cop reported, Kimmel announced the birth of his son Billy on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” He revealed the little one was born on April 21, but underwent open heart surgery just three days later due to a congenital defect. Though baby Billy is now home, he will need additional operations in the future.

During Kimmel’s tearful comments about the situation, he made a point to thank the staffs, by name, at both Cedars Sinai Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He especially encouraged viewers to donate to CHLA, since many patients there come from lower-class backgrounds. The late-night host also got political at the end of his remarks, expressing disgust and disbelief that some in Washington are considering cutting healthcare benefits. He urged politicians to come together to ensure all people, especially kids, have access to healthcare.

Now on the ABC talk show, Whoopi Goldberg began by echoing Kimmel’s statements. “He’s right about that. Something this vital should unite Republicans and Democrats. Because, who’s to make that decision? That’s what’s he’s basically saying,” said the moderator. “It should not be about whether you can afford to save your kid’s life. It should be that you’re entitled to save your kid’s life.”

Goldberg encouraged donations to CHLA, as well as St. Jude’s, noting, “As we all worry and try to figure out what’s going to happen with our healthcare, this is going to be what we’re going to have to do. We’re going to have to donate to the places who are doing the work for the youngest people that we know. They don’t have a choice. They’re our kids.”

The conversation became a bit tense, though, as the other panelists started weighing in. Joy Behar urged constituents to “hold their congress people’s feet to the fire.” Saying “profits over people is not American,” she ripped Republicans for not wanting to cover pre-existing conditions, a point Jedediah Bila later tried to counter.

Sunny Hostin also declared, “What’s also very American is we should be our brother’s keeper. We should be our sister’s keeper. We should take care of those that are least among us. If you have more money, then yes, maybe your taxes are a little higher, but a little baby like that, his or her life can be saved. That is why the Affordable Care Act is important.”

“That’s why it’s so frustrating to me when I hear about this repeal and replace,” a heated Hostin went on, noting, “A lot of Republicans are saying that if you’re healthy why should you have to pay for someone who is less healthy, THAT is why. That is why you pay.” Bila attempted to give another, more conservative, perspective, leading to a back and forth about how insurance should work.

As Gossip Cop noted earlier, a number of other celebrities are also reacting to Kimmel’s newborn son undergoing heart surgery. Check out “The View” video below.
