Jessica Simpson opened up about the success of her billion-dollar clothing empire during a live Q&A at this week’s annual Forbes Power Women summit.

“I have been every size on the planet and I understand women,” she told Forbes chairman and editor-in-chief Steve Forbes. “I just know how to dress them.”

Simpson explained, “I know there’s all different kinds. There’s life in the whole world beyond L.A. and New York. I understand Middle America and their mindset.”

The mother of two admits she looks to women of all ages when creating pieces for the the Jessica Simpson Collection.

“When I’m in approval or inspiration meetings, I think of what I want my Nana to wear, and what my 2-year-old daughter Maxwell would look adorable in,” said Simpson.

She explained, “I want to make every woman feel confident in what they’re wearing.”
