Jessica Simpson opened up for the first time on “The Early Show” this morning about Eric Johnson‘s proposal.

“I actually had to sit on his knee I was so shocked,” Simpson told host Harry Smith. “I didn’t even try the ring on until 5 minutes in,” she said. “I just sat there and cried with him.”

Johnson “had a plan a long time ago” to propose, the singer noted. “He had a [sit-down] with my mom and dad about it…He was a gentleman about it.”

Although the pop star only began dating Johnson in May, she already considers him “the best man in my life. Sorry Dad!”

The singer also revealed details about the ring, a three-stone diamond and ruby (her birthstone) sparkler from Neil Lane. “It was all Eric’s idea and he just wanted it to be special,” she said.

“The best thing about Eric is that he’s just really thoughtful and he keeps me very centered,” she gushed, adding that he “always makes me feel like my feet are on the ground and is probably the most special part of my life.”
