Heller’s death was announced on Saturday morning. No cause of death has been revealed, but a report says he suffered a medical emergency while driving in California on Friday, leading him to get into a car accident. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Heller, of course, is best known for managing N.W.A in its early years, though before teaming up with the hip-hop group, he worked with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Elton John, and Pink Floyd. Heller went on to join forces with Eazy-E and Ruthless Records, though his relationship with N.W.A. later fell apart, with both Ice Cube and Dr. Dre accusing him of stealing. After that, though, he still worked with acts like Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
But it’s Heller’s work with N.W.A. that has been a topic of discussion in recent years. Their time together was depicted in the critically-acclaimed movie Straight Outta Compton, which showed the iconic group’s rise and fall. Heller, however, took issue with how he was portrayed, and filed a lawsuit against the producers last year.
Seeking $110 million in damages, Heller claimed he was misrepresented and received no compensation for the use of his likeness. But this past June, most of the claims were thrown out, except for two defamation allegations. The case is still pending.
