Jennifer Love Hewitt ‘Proposal’ Report a Real Joke

The New York Post loves a good joke, but may have taken this one too seriously. Today the paper’s Page Six column congratulated Jennifer Love Hewitt and beau Jamie Kennedy: “The lovebirds got spontaneously engaged on stage at the Laugh Factory in Long Beach, Calif., Saturday night.”
No, congrats to Page Six for reporting a gag inside a comedy club as real news.
The item describes an audience member at Kennedy’s show yelling at the performer, “Marry her!” From there the comedian “got down on one knee and asked [Hewitt] to marry him, and the “glowing actress said yes even though he didn’t have a ring.”
Page Six hedged at the end of the piece: “let’s just hope it was the one line of the night that wasn’t a joke.” The only thing that’s funny here is that the paper reported the ‘engagement’ at face value. A rep for Hewitt deadpanned, “There is no truth to the report.”
